I have a few spare fans and one of them is different in design from the rest. It has 8 holes in it and I believe it dates from 36 hp vintage cars. Comparing it to the others, it is the same width and thickness and the vane count is the same. Anybody know why VW went to the solid fan? It looks like the lighter fan would be better as long as it moves the same amount of air as the solid ones. |

Not sure on those extra holes, I know you said same amount of vanes, but how many vanes are you talking about? Up into the first year of the 40HP the fans had fewer vanes in them. |

Some body told me along the way it was a race fan. HMM?
The holes you are talking about are on the opposite side of where the air comes in. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I count 28 vanes in both styles. The holes are opposite the air inlet. The fan is stamped with VW, but I don't find any other marking on it. |

That is an interesting picture. Mine has 28 vanes, though, so I guess it could be a later version of the one in the picture. |
