|
|
I've just lit off my recent 2.1 rebuild, and according to the temporary oil pressure gauge I've installed, as well as the stock hi and lo pressure switches it appears I have no oil pressure. I filled the filter with oil before installing, and the dipstick reads in the middle.
At first start I expected no oil pressure but I shut it down after about 10 seconds with no pressure. Then I cranked it with the coil wire grounded for a total of about 30 seconds (3 x 10 sec with 5 min starter cooling between). Still zero. Started it again for 10 seconds, no oil pressure. Lots of clattering from the lifters so I'm sure its not getting oil.
Any suggestions for things to check? I'm sure the gauge is good. The lifter noise is whats telling that oil pressure is not being built. How long before pressure builds in a new engine? I'd expect it to be a matter of seconds. |

Should be only a few seconds if the pump has prime. I find when this happens, if you built it right the thing to do is just wait awhile with the car on level ground and the oil filled to a normal level. The pump is below the oil line so with time it gets filled by gravity. Give it a couple hours then try again. Leave the filler cap on loosely so there isn't an air seal of the case when it starts; that might help. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Even with good oil pressure the lifters may be noisy until they pump up with oil, which can take ten minutes or so. The oil has to get really hot. _________________ 1990 GL 7-passenger

Ok here's a lesson learned. I had the back of the car up on 8" ramps. Jacked the car up, took out the ramps, and let it sit level for a few hours. Pulled the plugs, grounded the coil, and spun the motor. Made oil pressure in 5 seconds. Thanks (again) Tencent. |

There are parallel threads happening last night and today (see hero419's engine startup thread). Is there a way to merge them? _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Chris,
You write it. That way people will listen. New post"No ramps at start up" or something like that. _________________ If You Build It______It Will Run
