The Bentley say the D version replaces the earlier version. I have been wondering what is the difference and seem like the only thing I can find on the Samba is the D version has higher fuel cut off RPM. A while ago I bought a used D version ECU as a spare for my 87 GL. To make sure it works, I install it in my van and immediately notice the engine has less power. Thinking there must be something wrong with this ECU ,I bought another one and the result is the same. I was at a lost why this is the case.
Until recently when the "Clunker" thing come up, I looked up the EPA MPG for the Vanagon and noticed from the 1987 model year to 1988 model year ( the year they changed to the D version ), the mileage has gone up a whole ONE MPG. For that ONE MPG improvement you have a 90 HP engine instead of a 95HP engine.
Can some one with both version of ECU try it out to see if this is indeed the case ? _________________ Steve
