What is it and what does it do?

After a long road trip I was poking around the engine of my '89 Syncro and found this thing loose and disconnected. I discovered a hole that looked like it fit and plugged it in. Can somebody tell me what it is and what it does. Engine seems to run fine either way. Thanks.

On Syncros the engine and bellhousing are mated with silicone sealant so you can ford rivers and the clutch won't be flooded with water. That is just a vent hose for the bellhousing. Has nothing to do with engine operation.
