So the '67 I had went to a better home. I got a sweet deal from a fellow Portlander on a 66 deluxe. Thank you! (you know who you are) Here are some pictures on my progress. Even though I put a lot of work into the other one, this one needs a lot less work. The roof on this one has 3 small dents in it, while the 67 had about 10 thousand dents (as an example)
Seeing what the OG paint is like (that is my dad)
Took a 40 inch 3/4 drive breaker bar and this pipe to break the axel nut free. What a bitch. Someone please recommend some place to that rebuilds tranny/rgb's in the pdx area.
This is what happened to one of the socket wrenches we used
To lock the wheel, we figured out you could stick something in this hole. Worked really well.
Cleaned that black crap off with some lighter fluid.

Gary"s trans axle in kent is good to do buss with, he has done 4 trannys/RGB for me in the last few years no problems and has it done when he said it would be for the price he said, when was the last time you heard of that? P.M. me for his P#

I don't rebuild transmissions. I had thought he was asking about bus reduction boxes, and those are no problem for me to do. Now that I have reread his post I'm not really certain what Brady is looking for. |

I would expect that you broke the wheel cylinder into two pieces by doing that. Usually they crack right where the bolt goes through. |

I'm going to miss your awesome welds.
That nufinish stuff is great after compounding...comes out very shiney.

It had to be done. Couldn't lock the wheel up any other way. E-brake didn't work, brakes were gone. I was literally hanging on that bar like a monkey to get the nut to move. The stange thing was the other side was just finger tight.
I was looking for someone to look over the transmission. I'm going to pull it out and give it a good cleaning at the very least. I was reading in the Bently and the RGB's look pretty easy to rebuild. We'll see if I need any help though. I do have a few spring plate bolts that are broken off inside the back of the RGB.

Did you see the rubbing compound at the rear of the bus?  You are right though, that combination makes the OG paint look pretty darn good.
Thank you about the welds. I didn't really think they were that good. I only welded for about 2 hours before I tackled the long side rocker.

I used the Nu Vinyl in the late 70's on my vinyl top and it lasted for 2 years. I am not 100% sure I used Nu Finish in the 70's but I do remember I used something that was a wipe and shine product so this could be the same stuff. As I recall my 65 Pontiac was flat dull blue and I hardly rubbed the product in and she was shiny again. I was amazed.
Check out the commercial I remember seeing it on TV and that's how I learned about it. Whoa 70's how scary

Hey Brady, that's a small nut box diagram. Those take less time to rebuild, but still require about $500 in bearing pullers to make the job "pretty easy". On the big nut box you will need to weld a stud from the back side to pull the plug out. The job is pretty easy with the right tools, and a royal PITA without. |

Unless you know the transmission is bad, I would try to get it running & stopping to limp it around the block first. Check the gear oil first. If the tranny doesn't make an horrible noises, pop out of gears, or have any major leaks you might consider saving your money. It costs around $400 to rebuild the center section of the tranny and it takes about 8 hours to rebuild both boxes. Those late reduction box bearings aren't cheap, so expect about $200-$300 in parts for both sides if you want to replace them all.
As far as it "having to be done", to get the wheel nut off.
Get an impact gun. If that doesn't work buy one of these;

Having the right tools on hand always makes things easier and faster with less damage to surrounding parts. |

Is it normal to have RGB fluid pour out of this spot after you take off the brakes? The Bentley manual didn't mention this......
Transmission out! Most likely going to take it over to German Transaxel of America in Bend, OR.

The big part in the cargo area was hiding this big hole where the spare tire goes. I was able to cut that part out of my old bus to use in this bus. Here it is fitted and ready to weld up tomorrow.
