discovered a lot of brake fluid on my driveway this morning. it is coming from inside my rear brake drum.
do you normally need a new cylinder? or is it just a matter of rebuilding the old? _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport

Wheel cylinders are cheap. It's simply not worth your time or effort to rebuild the old one. Replace it, buy both sides and do them both at the same time. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

never rebuild. for a 71, the german cylinders are up to $110 each! the brazilians are cheap. or you can convert to a later year by installing later german wheel cylinder @ $25 each, but you would need later shoes and later emergency brake lever hardware and spreader bar. backing plate and drum is the same from 71-79 |

You can put a kit in without taking the cylinder off the car. As you live in Arizona I doubt the old cylinder is rusty.
It's a simple matter to take the cylinder apart, clean it with brake clean and a rag, then put the new seals in. If you see too many rust pits it needs to be replaced.
Personally I would rather have a German cylinder with German or American seals in it, than a Brazilian or Mexican cylinder brand new. But the kits are hard to get now. |

Make that 3. I still have a hone I bought in 1968. Haven't used it in years. But if I could buy the good kits I would. |

If you got fluid on the pads, you're gonna need a new set of those as well. _________________ - Brian -

if you really want a ATE rebuild kit, i have one minus the boots. the kit has only the two hydraulic cups. i got it because a detached shoe lining on my 71 shredded the old boot. it was a local acquisition, not a mail order, so i dont know where you can get a whole kit. |
