By taking the baffles out you may even lose power due to the slight reduction in back pressure.

You'll also lose that beloved VW soundtrack.

Do what you want but keep an eye on how the engine reacts. Check your plugs for colour changes as a sign that the motor is at all unhappy.

When you eventually get cheesed off with the noise at least it'll be easy to put right again.

On the graveyard shift myself right now. 11.32pm UK time. Rolling Eyes

There are some really nice sounding (larger) tips out there. I have a set in my stock muffler (bigger engine of course). Check our MidAmerica item number301-238.

A friend of mine did a low budget rat rod. He ended up using a stock exhaust only instead of using normal tips he just stuck pipes in that were about the same size. It had a unique sound and ran good. My guess is that you need to have some sort of tip or pipe to carry the exhaust fumes and heat away from the motor.

If you look closely at the stock tip, you will see it has an inner pipe made out of perforated metal. That pipe is surrounded by a sound deadening material and that is surrounded by the outer chrome pipe.

It's that inner perforated pipe that gives the VW it's distinctive (and some say annoying) tweety bird sound.

It's the sound deadening material that quiets things down a bit.

So, if you take a look, you may be able to figure out how to grab a hold of that inner perforated tube and yank it out of there along with the sound deadener. It ain't easy, but you can get them out of there.

Then just reinstall your chrome pipes and you will have a much nicer sound.

Ive got a 71 and i took the baffles out of the tailpipes and sounds very good. mine were nearly ruined so i just used vice gripes and tore the perforated metal out of the pipes.

I have a set of stock tips with the baffles still in and it doesn't really have the tweeting sound. But on the other hand it doesn't have any mufflers either Wink

Back in the 60s we used to make straight pipes by cutting down old chrome kitchen chair legs.

If you can find some stainless, chrome, or aluminum pipe the right size or even copper, copper has a mellow sound but it gets old polishing it every few days.
