Finally figured out a way to reduce picture file size so here are some from a trip last year. Blue Ridge Parkway in NC. Grandfather Mountain, 5,305'. "Mile high swinging bridge"
Hope this qualifies for wilderness!

I'm surprised I didn't see you on the road, I just got back from a stay at Gros Morne. Did come across this blue '84 at the Lomond camp site (the tan one is mine.)
More from Lomond:
And Rocky Harbor:
How was your speed on the hills along the coastal road? The 1.9l + auto in mine did not like them. Struggled to maintain 25mph on the big ones...though that was when loaded with 6 people + gear. |

2009 Grey Lake Forestry camp site on Vancouver Island our first try with the Westfalia Tent. She looked less than impressed when she took all of the poles out, but we got it together and even tested it out in the rain it worked well but kind of a pain to set up and take down.

Just got back from a week long road trip from PDX through Idaho into Montana over the Magruder corridor road then up to Glacier N.P. and down past Flathead lake. Then took the old Lolo Motorway over the Bitterroot Mountains back through Idaho. The Lolo Motorway in particular is spectacular as it winds its way from ridge top to ridge top in the steps of Lewis and Clark and the Nez Perce before them (http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/lewisclark/lcic/grasslands/lolo_motorway.html).

Here is where we woke up this morning, about 1/2 mile from the Mount Borah trailhead.
Mt Borah is the tallest peak in Idaho, a few week back a friend was visiting from out of town and browsing our atlas, he noted that Mt Borah was not that far from us and asked if we had ever climbed it, we hadn't, till today.
Wednesday I loooked at the forecast and it was prime for today, so yesterday afternoon I started getting the van ready, E got off work around 7:00, she helped get the last few thing done with the van and we were off at about 8:30, and parked at about 11:30.
We got up at about 7:00 this morning and made a bitchin breakfast then drove to the trailhead and started hiking at 7:45.
This is a BRUTE of a hike, 3.5 miles and 5250' of climbing the peak is 12,662.
Here is a pic of the front of our van and the peak of Borah in the back, this was taken after we hiked,
On the way up there were tons of old trees that were partially burnt and dead from perpetual drought, Mt Borah and the associated range is the driest range in the rocky mountains, ~10" of precip a year in the surrounding towns so all the trees are stunted mangled pieces of wood.
And this is becoming a habit of mine, whenever I am at some notable highest point, I stand on the actual highest point and jump as high as I can so There is a very good chance that nobody in Idaho has ever been as high as me without the aid of a plane, heli, etc...
Summit Beer! I have never been as high as I was today and drank a beer at the same time, it was awesome . At the exact moment that I cracked that beer open everyone else up there realized that for a short period of time I was king of the world
Shot from the top,
If you know where to look in this pic you can see our van,
Here you can see it in this way zoomed in pic,
And we finished the day off with a quick swim in Mackay reservoir on our way home
And if you look in the background of this pic I took on the way home you can see ayers rock, its a little blurry though...

We took our Westy out for the first camping trip this weekend. We drove from our house in Flagstaff up to Mogollon Rim and just explored back there and ending up camping at 8000ft overlooking the Blue Ridge res. The van drove like a champ. The gas gauge was a bit suspect so I was watching that real close and the averaged 21mpg. My only complaint is that at every filling station gas would come shooting out after the pump. Don't know what that's about. Guess i'll have to look into it. I was well impressed how well the Westy handle 60 miles of dirt roads and some pretty hairy 4wheel drive trails. Here are some pics from the weekend.

nice van domromer!
I think I saw it on Craigs list, my son lives in Tucson, and we often check to see what is for sale in AZ before we go visit him. several friends and family have asked us to keep an eye out for a nice van. Congratulations! |

I went driving on the beach in Cape Cod I got dug in a couple of times nothing the diff locks could not handle.
I would not try it in a 2wd I do not think they would not even let you in.There are about 200 seals you drive past laying on the beach.

Gallaher lake, again ----> Sept 3, 2009. About 1.5 hour (~2.5 miles) from the end of the gravel on a 4wd road. We had to stop to fill lots of holes and dips because of the reduced departure angle. This time we had a little motorcycle on the front, and another on the back. The "cascade blueberries" were ripe and plentiful so we had blueberry pancakes for breakfast!
20 seconds exposure, and a full moon. (~) "Mrs. Sodo" is hassling the fire. _________________

Here are a couple of shots from central Oregon, at the base of Mt. Bachelor, by Elk Lake. I needed the diff lock on this one.

This is not QUITE the wildnerness... Although that road DID get pretty rough... But here's Winston looming out of the woods in the Mummy Range, over the Cache Le Poudre River near Mishiwaka, Colorado:
