I have located several vintage Thermador swamp coolers but without the support strut to help stabilize the unit when mounted..anyone know where such a part can be purchased? |

I'd suggest scooping up those Thermos before they dissappear- then concentrate on the struts. I've never seen a spare strut- but if you were local to me- I'd pull mine off so you could duplicate it. Perhaps another owner would do the same? _________________

I have noticed that a majority of the vintage swamp coolers do not use a support rod but rely on mounting to the top door jam for its support.. |

it is very hard to come across one with a support rod. like hitest said buy one then worry about it. they are getting very hard to come by. thats what i did. i just had to make one. granted its not close to what the original looks like it works. i just dont drive with it on, not until i can make one like the original. i belive the original one had a foot on the bottom of it. here is a pic of what mine looks like
i suppose you cant really see it but all it is ia a 1/4 inch stainless steel rod that i threaded the top of it and put a rubber cap on the end. can some one post a pic of and original rod so i can make it exact? |

Nodak...do you drive w/o the support rod? several owners have told me they drive without the support and the unit seems stable... |

no i dont. i have a prop rod that i made, and i put the cooler on when i get to a show. i dont dare drive with it on till i can make or get an original prop rod. it is very unstable with out it. but i have one piece windows to so that probally doesnt help. |

thanks for the clarification..I understand the Firestone version requires a support rod since it mounts on the top of the window glass, where the Thermador uses brackets to clamp to the top of the door jam...and those owners say they drive w/o a support rod.. |

mine is a thermador that requires a support rod. but i have seen some that do clamp on the door its self, mine goes up into the window channel and you roll the window up on to it and screw a backing plate onto the inside of the window then use a prop rod. somebody correct me if i am worng but i believe they made a couple differnt styles. here is a pic of it.

There's a guy making repops. He advertises here from time to time. I directed Lee. to his ads when he bought a Thermador from me. Anybody know his username off the top of their heads? _________________

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The only thing he repops is the prop rod. _________________

That's the guy. I think Lee. bought one from him. Ask him how he likes it. _________________

* bonus info:
The prop rod with my Thermo is the flat channeled steel version- and has an "S" bend where it hooks over the scraper seal. This prop has worn a 1" tear in my OG seal- just a warning. (I call it a beauty mark)
I have run this cooler every summer for about 10 years now- and I'll bet it holds about 13 pounds of water and ice! I think I could run it empty w/o the prop- but certainly have one if you fill it.
Oops, almost forgot the street cred photo:
