Found this in the corner of the engine bay this evening. Anyone know where it went?
Thanks!

yes. to elaborate it is the return spring for the thermostat-controlled flaps inside the shroud. it is located in front (front is front) of the shroud, on the side you can't see with the engine installed. _________________ SL |

Thanks Scott. What will happen if not installed? I would imagine it has been off for a while? _________________ Rich

The spring is there to make your fan shroud flaps 'fail safe'.If something happens to your thermostat or rod connection the spring holds the flaps open so you don't cook your engine. It can be replaced with the engine in.'In a bay'.It fits on the fan shroud and cross over linkage to flaps. If you do a search,Performance/Engine/Racing\Sticky -Fanshroud and oil cooler sealing frame combos you will see a picture,9th down that shows it.With a flash light ,a long arm,and a small head it can be done |

Keeping in mind that half of all busses are missing their thermostats because they're expensive/hard to get (myself included), I should think that spring is fairly important. As the others have said, there are flaps that the thermostat keeps closed when the engine is cold to warm the engine up faster. Then at operating temps, the spring tugs the flaps open. If you have no spring, those flaps might well be down (not positive on the orientation of them, tho) all the time. If so, you're cooking your engine every time you drive. _________________ Cheers,

I found this same spring inside my engine compartment also. Can you post that picture into this thread, i couldnt seem to see the spring in the sticky you referred too. Also my Bus is a 1978 so it has the engine hatch up top, do you acess this place from the top or the bottom of the engine. _________________ '78 Champagne Campmobile

How big is that spring in the photo, maybe something like a quarter or dollar bill placed next to it for perspective?
To me, it looks like an accelerator return spring. My cooling flap return spring looks different than that? _________________ www.zwerks.ca |
