1973 Thing Pan up....Just starting.

Hello all i am JON. I am a current owner of a 1967 orig vert bug and two 1973 Things.... I am now starting the pan up on the best of the two and parting out the other. Please follow along and add any comments of encouragement you might have. Have any of you powder coated? If so what are the drawbacks versus old school painting? Is there any products that really stop or nutralize rust?

Awesome Jon, I just bought a 73 and hope to get some parts from ya...I really need a rear engine tin as mine is not the right one....As far rust neutralizing, not really but there some good rust removers...and then some good sealing primers paints like Zero Rust and Por15. Power coating is much more duable than paint but much costlier. It's a baked on plastic coating basically.

Horse poop, aka road apples, well thats a first. I wonder if a horse actually used the Thing as a toilet, farmer John just used it as a trash bin or some agricultural use, fertilizer etc or some pranksters.

Looks like you have your work cut out..keep everyone posted on the project.

I've done some DIY powder coating with a Harbor Freight gun and an old electric oven. As long as you strip the parts to bare metal, you can get some really nice results. Obviously you can't do your pan at home, but you can do anything that fits in the oven. Check out this site for some powder coating and other refinishing goodies.

Thing 1 found 5 blocks from my house covered in weeds in the back of a 3 acre parcel of land. A new asphalt trail was made on old railroad tracks for walking and biking...1st day it was asphalted i ran on it and saw the first of three. It was in a field with three horses and one horse used to back up to it and crap in the car....quite funny.

Thing 2. after my sons friend came to our house he told us there was one next door to his grandmother...4 days later i owned Thing 2. Both in good shape but Thing two was less rusty and more complete.

Thing 3. after calling people to do motor work for me i was told where there was one in another city that a lady was trying to get rid of. Not as complete, no motor, but fairly straight with a beautiful pan. Now i need to completly disasemble the third one to get the pan...after i make sure its legal. I have a lot of parts i need to get rid of....Am thinking of making one of them a full on street legal off roader and the best of them all will be slammed....

definitely time and patience required. been attacking mine off and on for the past month for sure. got another couple weeks off and on before finish

I have Thing #3. For a wiring harness I have got 2 for past VW's from Ron Francis.com (Bare Bonz kit BB-695) Its the one I am getting for my Thing... Hood and deck lid should be done when you drop off the body..

Alright, i need to kick up the job a notch. HOA is getting a bit upset that i have two Thing in pieces next to my house. I need to get the pan back and start the build. I will be ordering all of the seals, bearings and moldings this week. Any suggestions on where to buy? I am very interested in quality rubber not necessarily cheap... I only want to do this once (to this car).
