my standard is Dec. 53 and i have a beat to hell grooved semaphore that came out of it. i cant claim its original but it sure seemed like it was. also a melted lense in the other B pillar when i cut into it,missing semaphore. |
My late December 1953 Panel had smooth semaphores on it when I got it in about 2000. It had been parked and untouched since 1975. |
I believe the chage was sometime n December 1953. Dee's singlecab does not have it's original semaphores, but by progressive refinements it should have the ribbed ones. |

I'm almost sure those rear opening hatches were done only at the factory.... and of course we (klassicfab) do them now... _________________ that's not patina, that's fucking rust man!!!!

BTW the pic of the DLX roofs is taken from the 1953 Peter Keetmann photography book 'a week at the factory' . Most of you will know it anyways.
Among mostly oval bug production pics It also contains this one:
( look at the paint quality and the mirror image of the parked ovals and buses in the opposite row) This book is ART !

I think this hatch looks like it could be an "other than factory" installation.
It is equipped with a funky T-handle too. Replacement???, or just a different style of handle used by a coach-builder who added the hatch to the bus for a customer? With the amount of coach-built alterations being done in europe in the 50's, I would think that almost anything could be changed, to suit the needs of the owner of a vehicle that was marketed as a versatile commercial vehicle. _________________ Looking for these items for my June '53 kombi:

I would think the factory would use what it had. I think it is the same as the engine lid, but I could be wrong. |

Not really sure what you are making reference to Bubba, but the T-handle for a factory rear hatch is the same as the one for the engine lid, if that is what you are saying. The one on that hatch is not a regular rear hatch handle. Also, look at the raised lip that surrounds both the hatch itself and the surrounding metal that the hatch closes into. I am pretty sure that hatch has been added to the bus after it left the factory by an outside party. Of course I could be wrong, but that is what appears to be going on there. This is what a factory hatch looks like.
Definitely different. No raised metal framing the opening or the hatch, and a factory T-handle. _________________ Looking for these items for my June '53 kombi:
