In the process of replacing the front springs to gain more height, we decided to replace a torn upper ball joint; which necessitated removing the lower ball joint to get the vertical link off to free the upper ball; which meant removing the speedo cable from the centre of the hub; which of course lead to stripping the outer rubber covering off the cable and destroying the rubber grommet which seals the cable into the back of the vertical link!
So checking with the local VW dealer, finding part number 111-957-855B, only to find it is obsolete and NLA!
So now what are the options? Would any piece of small diameter tubing wedged in there be sufficient seal to prevent destroying the cable? Any other options anyone has come up with? _________________ '88 VW Westfalia

Thanks justcairns. Without that part number I never would have found it. The price is right, but I felt it just wasn't worth ordering that one small piece, so I McGyvered a replacement
Found a piece of rubber tubing with the inside diameter just right for the speedo cable. Ground the outer diameter down removing the reinforcing mesh till it was the right diameter for the spindle hole, leaving a larger diamter as the original had..
Applied silicone outside and slipped it in. Applied silicone to the speedo cable and slipped that in. Looks good so far. I know it will be difficult to remove, but probably no more so than the original that got shredded trying to get it out. _________________ '88 VW Westfalia
