|
|
In the continued pursuit of perfection and always seeming to be in the unfortunate situation of finding/buying buses without their original engines, this thread is dedicated to finding the long ago cast aside soul (engine) of our buses.
For example, I have a April of 55 singlecab VIN 20 125xxx, according to the VW Tansporter and Microbus Specfication Guide, the singlecab should have a engine # between 20-991 590 and 20-1120 614. However, using this site as a more accurate resource (sheck under, techincal, vin numbers) a more accurate range would be 20-1023 849 to 20-1049 452.
I have located engine # 20-1259 415, which would have been produced in October-November of 55.
Ultimately I would like to find an engine produced in April of 55, so I would like to purpose the use of this thread to find, trade, buy, sell engines to complete the accuracy of our passions.
I look foward to helping others in this pursuit, as I have several engines that I am willing to trade or sell in an effort to close the gap between VIN and engine production #'s.
Thanks,
Douglas Denlinger

I have an May '55 engine case #20-1 062 057 and would be willing to trade it for either a NOS case or a late June/Early July '55 engine case in equal or better condition. My bus has a Vin # s 20-135395 so I would want the engine number to be close to 20-1 106 000.

My May '55 case takes standard size beaings, but will need to be align-bored. I see no additional problems, and the thrust surface seems undamaged. This case has been stored inside, and has no water damage. I will only consider trades for cases that are in equal or better condition. |

I was just thinking about engine #'s and production of bus dates. In the VIN section on here, it has month's with vin #'s and engine #'s. Are they correct on when the Engine #'s went into busses for that month or are the engine #'s produced that month but could have not been put into a bus until the next month or two? I was searching for a correct date case for a march 58.
23 window collection, Like your single cab, it says on here
VIN Engine
Mar 20-122491 20-1 023 849
Apr 20-126350 20-1 049 452
But your book has an earlier # that could be correct for it, made in early march. |

Great thread! Great idea!
My 31 Jan '63 bus came with original 1500 engine (M-216)
# 0 160 230
Sure would love to locate that case and rebuild it.
Would cough up some serious cash to get it if available. |

what happens when you find the correct and ORIGINAL to the vehicle case and the seller wont sell it or wont continue any discussion regarding any sort of offer or compensation? _________________ www.blastserv.com

Aggravation, frustration
Why won't the "holder" of the engine let it go back to the OG vehicle?
If the current "holder" needs a specific motor that is in the same number range.....maybe just maybe someone will have the engine the "holder" really needs. Or prehaps we can help through gentle or so so gentle persuasion the necessity for the two units to reunite? |

March of 58 according the Eccles book would fall between 305 526 and 314 630 |

The vehicles I have seen with original engines matched the listing on this site. The only discrepancies I have seen were in regards to some of the month-end numbers. So no, you would not typically see an engine # dated a month earlier than the vehicle.
The numbers on the site are from the VW Dealer book Progressive Refinements and I would refer to those over any other non-VW book. _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks Mr Mike and StephenMullens, I been kicking this idea around for at least year, I should have started the thread earlier, however, life has been just WAY too busy.
In reality this thread needed to come online years ago before VW stopped providing engine numbers on the cardex/birth certificates. Anyone know a way around this glitch, thanks VW.
Lets hope we can reunite engines with buses. |

I was informed by another knowledgeable member of the community that within two months before or after the month of manufacture was accurate. I guess not! That makes my search even tougher. |

Not to be a Buzzkill....but is there any difference in a bug/bus 36hp? Does it just depend on the numbers?? I picked up a 36hp with my haul this summer...but it's definately out of a bug.

'55 & earlier engine cases have a "20-" prefix for busses and a "1-" prefix for beetles.
Both are pretty hard to find and mildly valueable considering.
Later cases seem to be worth very little unless you find someone wanting that specific number. |
