Can't seem to find any info on this. Is it possible to convert the intermittent wipers to variable intermittent?

As loogy posted.
Passats have the relay with a .99 that replaces the .19 relay and it is programmable on the fly. Mine is VW part# 357 955 531. Good luck. |

So its a simple plug and play relay? Then how do you control the timing of the wipers? Do you change out the stock with a Passat or install an aftermarket control dial on the dash? _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. plug and play, nothing changed other than relay. Turn the stock wiper lever to intermittent(down) then off for time desired then back on and it sets itself. I use it all the time in light rain or heavy fog. |

Pull the lever into the intermittent position, and, as the wiper does it's sweep, click back into the stop position, if you want a 3 second gap, then wait 3 seconds, and click back into the intermittent position. Bam, you just programmed a 3 second timing. There ya go. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

Lots of VWs have this relay, starting sometime in the early Golf era. If you've got a good boneyard nearby you might find a couple in a day of looking. |

Many thanks for the replies! Sounds like it's one of the simplest "mods" one can do to a Vanagon. Can't wait. _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” - Edward Abbey

According to loogy's second link the Cabrio used it for 3 years, The Corrado 3 years, Golf and GTI for 4 years, and the passat for 8 years. If I find a passat I always look because they used it for so many years. It is also easier to get to the relays in a passat- just lazy I guess . Good luck. |

I just ordered it from Loogy's second link. A bit pricey, but the ability to set my wipers to my liking....priceless. Not pricey really. The cheap online dealer that I like wants almost $50 for a OEM one. That should help you from any buyer's remorse. |

Keep in mind somebody may have upgraded this part in a VW that isn't on your list, and then junked the car. I've personally put the "99" relay into three Rabbits, two A1 Jettas, a Scirocco, and two Vanagons. |

Is this upgrade good for all model year Vanagons with intermittent wipers?
(bonus from my engine swap: 99 relay from donor Jetta!)

It worked fine in my '90, '91 and both of my '86 vanagons. |

Thanks syncrodoka.
A quick look at Bentley shows '86 and '81 are similar. 53 *seems* different.
