I switched my oil from Shell Rotella 15-40wt to Mobil 1 15-50wt. With no other changes to the engine or outside conditions (hotter'n hell in Texas), the engine is running 15-20 deg. cooler on the synthetic oil. Otherwise, the engine performs the same way. Its just running at 180 deg. f. instead of 200 deg. f. after it gets warmed up at highway speed. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. _________________ NTHANG, LLC |

Yea, I use that stuff in my Bug, Thing, and Squareback and it works great. Runs a lot smoother too. I use the Valvoline 10W30 Max Life Full Synthetic. Best shit on the market. |

Do you need to have the engine cleaned out or anything, or can you just switch to synthetic with an oil change? |

No it is not necessary to clean the engine out to switch to a modern oil. I switched to Sunoco with a noticeable improvement in oil consumption and heat. I even had to fiddle with the carburetors to adjust the idle. I recommend to use a filtering device of some sort. Full Flow or a Filter Pump will do. Modern oils keep debris floating and that debris gets then filtered by the ... you guess... the oil filter. Now a air cooled Type 1 VW engine has no real filter. In traditional mineral oils, debris sinks to the ground of the sump forming a nasty sludge. But this behaviour guarantees fresh clean "unfiltered" oil to the engine bearings. Now if you switch to a modern synthetic oil which keeps contaminations afloat you get "dirty" oil to the bearings. This calls for a filter, as used in modern engines. Even VW added a filter pump to the last produced engines.
