Hey all. I'm refinishing my bumpers on my 70 bay. Nothing fancy, just pounded out all the little dents and smoothed it out with some nice old fashioned bondo.
But I'm nearly ready to paint them. My question is, do I reassemble the front bumper ends to the blade with the plastic insulators installed before painting them or paint the parts and then assemble the bumper leaving the insulators unpainted?
I would appreciate knowing what the original state was when it was new....
Regards,
Charles |

I don't have a clue. All my bumpers have been assembled when painted and I was happy with them. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

They were painted assembled but the plastic was installed afterwards, the ends on the front were left off as far as I can tell. all the brackets were definitely installed first which you should do too as I'm sure you don't have a factory jig to build them on, but you should fit it to the bus pre paint. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Have you figured out where to get new insulators? Couldn't find them anywhere. |

Before you paint them assembled, make sure you have good paint protection under the joints.
If you paint them first, keep in mind that they are a real bear to assemble, particularly when you are trying to get the plastic in the right position. Maybe worth protecting them with masking tape toavoid scratches. _________________ 71 Superbug

All good stuff men. I do have the new insulators already. But I'm going to take Busdaddy's advice and fit the whole deal to the bus first, then snug up the bolts for the ends, then take it back off for paint.
Darn stuff always takes longer than you expect but it is the right way to do it. Still a long way to go but only a bit more to be back on the road! |
