Because I was bored, I was leafing through my Thing Parts notebook and saw "air deflector plates - right and left- 126 119 462 and 126 119 461 for a 1973. I don't have these. Do I need them here in the deep South (SC)? If so I'll make them from sheet metal. If not, I'll shut up.

I think these tins are to protect your push rod tubes against damage by flying rocks etc. On Bugs, the heat exchangers are doing that. The exchangers are missing on 73 Things or Things equipped with a gas heater.
I can not imagine that they aid a lot to the cooling of the engine.

Then again, this is my opinion...
