|
|
Got the MC out of the van and the container off the top of it and now I want to clean out the container. I removed the inlet cylinder type screen but am unsure of what type of solvent to put in there to clean out the dirt/sludge.
What to use? Gas or carb cleaner or mineral spirits or soap and water or brakecleen or throw it in my chemcal tank.
Obviously, I am concerned about ruining the plastic. _________________ 86 Syncro Wolfsburg edition

Rubbing alcohol. It will clean it out and dry/evaporate very fast. If you use soap and water BE SURE IT IS DRY AS DRY COULD BE be for re-installing.
I am not a fan of using gas on plastic parts that may/may not be resistance to its dissolving nature. _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” - Edward Abbey

I believe brake fluid will break down in soap and water so I'd try that first. Obviously be sure to thoroughly dry before installing. |
Brake fluid does break down nicely in water. Dishwashing detergent and hot water along with a bit of shaking will leave the part squeaky clean. Dry the thing with a hair blow dryer when you're done.
It'll look like new. I've done all three of mine this way. _________________ Current fleet: Vanagons, two '88 GLs and an 89 Bluestar. Beetles, '63, '64, '72 convertible. Plus, four Subarus and three Prius. Too many cars. |

Soap and water, thorough water rinse. Then rinse with an ounce of alcohol (no, not that ounce you were about to drink, the one with the pleasing caramel color and malty aroma). Shake like crazy to let the alcohol grab up every droplet of water. Air dry. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Thanks everyone, don't think I will do this in the kitchen sink as the wife might get pissed. Will have to use the sink in the basement. haha _________________ 86 Syncro Wolfsburg edition

Any hints on how to do that? I tried in vain to pull it up and out. Didn't want to force it, but it seams like there is a simple solution based on how easy it turns in there. _________________ -------------------------

Ah yes James: I fiddled with that thing last night and it seemed to line up several different ways due to the notches in it. I tried several times and then used a small screwdriver and it popped out, don't ask me how. Didn't want to break it. Just keep on trying. _________________ 86 Syncro Wolfsburg edition

Mine was NASTY. I used a solution of water and dawn. Compressed air to blow out most of the moisture, and then hit it with the blow dryer I keep in the garage. Then popped in 3 or 4 of those silica gel packs that come in new electronics packages. I have a one quart ziploc bag full of those things, we always save them when we find them in a box. Taped off all the opening and let that sit overnight. Next day took out the packs, and the inside was dry as a bone. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

brake fluid is a HAZARDOUS WASTE
do NOT put it down the sink - even a drop
also keep it away from paint - it will take the paint right off your van
I use - guess what - brake cleaner to clean these areas. |

Use SEARCH. End of thread!
And don't ask any questions that were once apon a time asked back in 2003! I'm a grumpy person so I always look for threads I can write ^that on. |

I would soak it in Budweiser for a day or so and then rinse it real good with Coors.
If its really gunked up I would soak it in Colt 45 and follow it up with a good rinse in Schlitz.
If none of those suggestions work, nothing will so toss it out and get a new one. |
