So, I've just come across an ample quantity of 2" steel tubing and a nice deer guard appears to be in the works.

I really appreciate the ingenuity and aesthetics of itzdshtz's and tclark's bumpers and was wondering if anyone had any dimensions on the bumper mounts.

This is a van that Rocky Mountain Westy is putting together. I like how the rear nerf bar flows into the rear bumper. They had to modify the slider door linkage to clear the other side. The way they did it was pretty slick.

I love what Rocky Mountain Westy is producing, but I can't help thinking it looks like an NFL facemask. Definitely burly in appearance, and would probably fair well in a frontal collision.

I know I could have used it the other day when I hit a deer with my van. Evil or Very Mad

OUCH! I hope you and any passengers were alright, and the deer suffered a lesser fate! Twisted Evil

I'd forgotten what it's like living in deer country. Every summer I head to MT I'm reminded about the deer because EVERY truck, semi, and passenger vehicle has some sort of extra front end protection like this - The Moose Bar. This must be where Alaric drew his inspiration! Laughing

I like it but I think on tight trails it would make tight turns a little harder it looks like it makes the van longer but the side bars are great. I am glad there is a brush guard around thats weirder than mine.

Syncro-Bernds TV project syncro had a real nice look to it, until they painted the details orange. But this cage is soo cool.

For my own westy I have a Land Rover item lying in the basement. I'm reluctant to fit it cause I don't reallt want to add weight to this already heavy brick. It does look good though Very Happy Here it is fitted on a doka.

The more functional bars cover the nose and lights fairly well plus can hold up to a hit. I like the one on that dark green doka best.

The Rocky Mtn. one looks functional but ugly, and I'm not so sure it'll keep a large deer or moose body from sliding right up into the nose and windshield.

taigagreen, you always post the coolest pics. Very Happy

my fav would have to be the white panel. Very Happy

before the advent of my own economic downturn I worked up in the PDX as a damage writer for a large car rental fleet, a collision with bambi can pretty much ruin your day as well as your vehicle, I'm thinking that most of the bars in this thread wouldn't hold up to a direct hit (except for the moose bars on the semi and I'll bet they would not come away unscathed).

colleagues up in the Great White North tell stories of collision with a moose...not something to joke about.

Someone recently died in a deer collision up in Northern Idaho, which is not all that uncommon up there, and I've had one hit (the deer hit me - it survived) and many close calls myself in that region. And I suspect you're right - most of these bullbars have a 'coolness' factor but likely not strong enough except for a very low speed hit. A full grown moose's massive body is right at about vanagon windshield level. Don't drive up there at night without a large mounted anti-aircraft high-beam light.

Glad you like the pics Very Happy

All the finnish T3s in the above pics have those bars for a reason. Any wildlife hitting your car in motion will cause damage, even a rabbit.

In Scandinavia we have lots of moose. We actually have the highest moose and deer density in the world. What I've found is that extra driving lights are the defining factor in night driving security. The cervids and the other animals are most active when its dark, and up here we only have a bleak hour of "daylight" in december and january. I mount Bosch Rallye lights on all my cars and I am certain they have saved several moose, reindeer fox, otter, hare, roe deer, red deer, one lynx, a horse and a few cats as well as myself and my syncros.

I feel safer in a T3 because you sit high up. Most cars colliding with moose or other big cervids get the entire impact of the animal on the glass house of the car. Very scary, these are big creatures...

This one went over the family car and ended up in their caravan... No serious injuries.

This is no joke...

The Norwegian Instutite of Transport Economics has calculated that, on average, each time a cars hits a moose it brings a cost to society in the amount of 265.000 NOK (about 45.000$). I find it strange that the authorities yet haven't figured out how much they would save if they just gave away free extra driving lights...

My little safety precaution, always mount extra driving lights:

Have a look at this: http://www.vg.no/bil-og-motor/artikkel.php?artid=584577

A guy happened to be taking pictures of a few moose when one of them was hit by a car. No-one was hurt but the moose died and her calf tracked down and shot. The pic of the moose inn the air sais it all really.

Awesome looking van, but my eyes keep thinking it's photoshopped.
Maybe not though.
