I'm thinking about buying some seat covers from Sewfine. They sent me some fabric samples, but I'm having trouble visualizing some of them stretched across an entire bench seat (particularly the tweeds).
I'm looking in the tan -> brown color range, but would be interested in seeing pictures of any Sewfine fabrics.
Perhaps this thread can be a good reference for future Sambanistas.
If you can post a pic, please also list the fabric name/color, and any other details.

Sewfine did these for me. The rear bench was done in the gray tweed. I could try to post some pics if you're really interested.

Thank you! Winston has become something of a TARDIS... He looks much nicer on the inside than he does on the outside. I'm planning on at the least getting him de-dented.

I had sewfine with a previous van. All seats, cushions and panels. Getting ready to do the same with my current one.

Yeah, it looked good, but it was actually a piece o' crap!
Literally fell apart, starting with both of those top lids, and right quick.
...didn't come from sewfine btw, samba vendor sells em, 90=100 bucks. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Pretty sure they sell you a new cover, and instructions for taking off the old fabric and installing their. Don't quote me though. _________________

They sell upholstery kits just the seat covers unless you order foam. I have used their bus and type 3 kits and they didn't have instructions. |

yeah no instructions, overall tho it's not hard to do it yourself. just take it slow.
lessons i learned...
- the wire on some edges was rusted, i bought some generic utility wire at the hardware store to replace it.
- my front seat pads were really worn in, and as a result the front seats were a little baggy looking on the backs, so i jammed some extra foam in there and it worked great.
- if you do door panels get extra clips, in fact get all new ones, from sewfine. the ones they have are much better than the crap at the local autozone.
- their side panels are nice, but thicker than OEM which makes installation harder and make installing power window switches a nightmare.
here's pics of mine, they are not tweed, but i thought i'd post them for anyone else searching this thread. also i'm really happy with the vinyl, with two big dogs and a 5yo kid it cleans up great and i don't have to worry about stains.

OEM upholstery is usually installed using metal hogrings, very difficult to work with. Clip them all off w/ cutters. When installing the new upholstery, use nylon zipties instead of the hogrings; nice & easy to work, and they allow you to keep the fabric loose until you're ready to snug it down, giving you much more room for your hands.
I've done 2 sets of Subaru seats using surplus OEM leather kits from Ebay, they turned out great.
It's also an excellent opportunity to install an aftermarket heated seats kit; you can get a kit to do 2 seats for about $150. _________________ '86 Syncro CHC Top AAZ Turbodiesel

That reminds me that I need to finish wiring the driver/passenger heated seats in my truck. |

Thanks for the pictures everyone!
I'm still deciding what I want to do, but the pics certainly do help.
I'm going to direct the Sewfine rep I've been talking to to this thread as well...
since he told me that they don't have pictures of many of their fabrics installed. He said that they usually just send out the pre-made covers, therefore never seeing the final installed product.
I bet they will appreciate seeing the pictures as well as reading all the Sewfine praise.
Keep the pics coming! _________________ '86 Wolfy Westy Weekender

noqanav, did you get your covers sent to you in Vancouver? I am wondering how much shipping would cost and hoe much you got stung for duty.
I like the neoprene covers that seatglovers sell for their waterproofing (great for post mtb and snowboarding use) but
a) they don't list any vans
b) been wondering if Fiji Island upholstery on 2nd and Main are worth a look at.
Know anyone that have used them? |

I had them shipped to Seattle actually, so I can't help with estimating those costs. I asked at several places in Vancouver and Seattle, but Sewfine was much cheaper because they already have the patterns on hand. The top estimate was $700 per seat! Sewfine is a fraction of that. They're also very easy do deal with, you could probably ask them about tax and duty coming into Canada, I'm sure that they must have had a few Canadian deliveries by now. |
