Lots of people are asking how to shut off their fuel pump. I had the same concern and didn't like the inertia switch deal. Painless wiring products helped me out with incorporating an electric fuel pump shutoff using a Holley switch and Painless fuel pump relay. i can't say enough about how great painless was when I was wiring my car. They have excellent tech support. This setup works great. The Holley switch allows the fuel pump to pump while cranking the motor and shuts the fuel pump off when there is no oil pressure. Nice safety feature in case of a failure or accident.

Hey, I was just reading your post on this install and it's exactly what I'm trying to accomplish with my 71 bus. I appreciate the post and the drawing, but I stil have a couple questions (kind of new to wiring in general). When you run the wire from the relay to the battery (+), where are you tying into the battery positive and when you show that line running through a circuit breaker, I assume that's an inline fuse? What would the amp's be on that?

Also, when you're going from the oil pressure switch, to the ignition switch, where are you tying in for that connection.

My assumption is you're not going directly to the battery terminal or directly to the ignition switch for these two connections. Sorry for the probably lame questions and thanks again for the help.

There is a Nason pressure switch that is rated for high enough current to eliminate the relay from the circuit. I'll find the part number if anyone is interested.

Another pressure switch that may be of use here is a late model (1987-on) Ford oil pressure sender. It is Normally Open instead of the usual Normally Closed idiot light switch used on VW and other cars.

You can use a A1 Rabbit FI relay. It has an extra terminal that connects to the coil. As long as the coil is firing it will supply power to the fuel pump. So when you're cranking the engine or it's running the pump will work. If the engine stalls it will turn off.

I found an old Rabbit at a junkyard and the fuel pump relay was part # 3.300.220. It has the following terminals:

30
31
15
87
1 ( small terminal size)

Will this work or does it have to be the one that is listed above? If so, does terminal 1 take the place of 31b?

Just wondering if this would work with a non points type system(compufire/pertronix)?

mr ragpicker, the CIP relay will NOT do the same thing, it doesn't have the coil connection. I think the golf relay will work as will similar relays from 80's audis and porsche 924's. Places like pelican parts and automotion have the fuel pump relays for about $30. i use this system too rather than the oil pressure system.
