I had a mild heart attack 18 months ago and decided to buy a Vanagon Camper to travel in anticipation of retirement in 3 to 5 yrs. After spending about $3,500 in parts and about 100 hrs or my work on it, my wife has decided she doesn't like it and wants me to sell. (I have a small garage and 2 Porsches.)

1987 VW Westfalia Weekender. 165,000 miles.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Work done by prior owner

1. VW Factory rebuilt engine (Canadian) 30k miles ago.
2. $2,500 in F/R brake work. No receipt, but brakes look fine.

New Parts I have Installed:

1. New rear bumper. All bumper end caps F/R.
2. All new headlight adjusters.
3. New muffler, muffleer straps, catalytic converter, oxygen sensor and tailpipe.
4. New fuel pump, filter and all new fuel lines from tank to engine and new lines to fuel injectors.
5. Fuel tank reseal kit installed.
6. New AC compressor, Receiver/Dryer, Expansion valve and all 5 AC hoses replaced. Ready to be charged.
7. New Pop-Top seal kit--both pop-top and luggage rack seals.
8. Top cleaned with GW Protect All Oxidation Remover and sealed with 303 Fiberglass Restorer.
9. New Skylight.
10. Set of new lugnuts for the stock 14" alloys.
11. Set of 4 Hankook 185R14 tires.
12. Several cooling hoses replaced.
13. New Plugs, distributor cap, plug wires, rotor.
14. New Alternator.
15. New air filter. New belts.
16. New CV joints one side.
17. Cleaned and regreased other side and all new boots and bolts.

Work I've Done:

1. Flushed cooling system and refill using Prestone coolant and distilled water.
2. Changed oil/filter twice and new drain plug.
3. Drained trans filter twice and replaced trans filter.
4. Flushed the AC condensor and cleaned rear AC cabinet. Waiting to charge AC system with Red-Tek or r34A.
5. Flushed brake fluid.
6. New tires means no more sway at 70 mph. Front end tight.
7. New exhaust system allows fuel injection 18 mpg on interstate.
8. 5 stock alloys (including spare).
9. Have rear bug screen but not side door screen.

New Spare Parts:

1. Hepi Water Pump
2. 4-Bosch WR7 spark plugs
3. New Bentley Manual
4. Ignition Switch
5. 2-Relays--1009510001
6. 2 Front, 1 R wheel bearing seals
7. Hoses--Tank 025 121 108D 025 121 058 J
8. Hoses--025 121 058 H 251 121 058 A
9. Oil cooler hose 025 121 058 GMY
10. T Piece--11954024066

The bad:

1. Sliding door panel is gone.
2. Clear coat on exterior paint is flaking. Some dings and some seam rust treated with rust killer.
3. Crack in windshield, of course, right in front of driver's view.
4. Rear apron over muffler is banged up.
5. Original rear pad replaced with a piece of foam.

What is it worth for resale?

Depending on what part of the country you're in it will bring different prices. Here in the NW I would think you might get more like $4500-$5500. The poptop without the camper interior is pretty desirable and harder to find.

You would be able to much better than that.
Is that a Wolfsburg badge?
Despite some mild body rust, has it been a southern van and never seen salt?
In the NW, I'm thinking $7-8k easy. Especially if you fix a couple of those cosmetics.

The van has been in the South the last 5 or 6 yrs. My receipts are at home on the rebuild, so I don't remember but I think it was installed in Colorado. The underside of the bus looks great with minimal signs of rust.

There is a Wolfsburg badge on the van.

I hope to take lots of photos Saturday and then post it in the Classifieds at $6,500. At that price, I'm way upside down with original purchase and money spent on it--so I'm not spending any money on paint or windshield.

There are some more photos of the van in my AC Rebuild thread:

The Canadian rebuild is not know for its quality.

I'd say 3,500

Edit: Thinking about it a little more, I have the same year, same color, full camper and I just did a rebuild myself and sent the trans to German transaxle for a preventative rebuild.

If I were to sell it now (it still needs brake and suspension work) I would ask
5,000-6,000. (never would sell)

I don't think I would get it. It's just that I put so much heart and soul in it that I think it would be worth more than it is.

Thank God my wife is supportive of everything I do! She loves my Westy and thinks it was a wonderful idea. We've been married 10 years. I can't imagine having my partner tell me to sell my vehicle because she "doesn't like it". I guess I'm lucky.

I don't have that problem either, but that's because my wife knows what the answer would be.
Actually, it's her van. She bought it, and I bought all the parts and did all the work. We're just about even.

To the OP, check out the "Good deals on nice vans" thread.
It would give you an idea of what a van priced to sell looks like.

The 911 is a '71 and goes to my son post mortem.

I realize the economy sucks and this is a poor time of year to sell, but show me a running poptop for less than $3,000 and add $3,500 in part receipts plus lots of work on my part, and $3,500 is an unrealistic, low-ball valuation.

Maybe I was unclear. The $3,500 spent does not include the original purchase price.

I agree, that other samba link is to a van with blown engine:
"-Coolant is leaking from head gaskets
-Some oil smoke from the exhaust
-Brake rotors are rusted
-Upper balljoints and control arm bushings are cracked
-Radius rod bushings cracked
-Power steering lines rusted "

Thats nothing like your van. You did some really nice work on your AC system. Im sure any buyer will be lucky to get it, and I think your asking price is fair.

I dont need another van, so just here to say, sorry about your heart, and very nice van, fairly priced.. imho, any van under 5k, probably needs a motor, yours obviously has that base taken care of already.. and btw, its rare to find a van with working AC, or any AC at all, yours is a cherry.

And its a Wolfsburg!

nice piece, would be good for the grandkids, mention that to your wife and she might let you keep it..

If I was buying a Westy, these items would knock about $2,000 off the price that I would offer. They make it look like there are a bunch of other hidden problems. If you want to keep the buyer's attention on the excellent and very valuable preventative maintenance work that you have done, it will be impossible with big, visual flaws. The problem is that people with money in pocket will walk away, and only the low-ballers remain.

Not much can be done (sensibly) about the flaking clearcoat. I think the other 3 problems above could be handled for about $250 (??) and ( ....relying ONLY on your SAMBA description ) this could net you about 1,000 - 2,000 or more, value. The door panel and the rear foam can be had, and installed in 20 minutes. And the windshield is a phonecall away, maybe $150? Maybe SirSam has some parts that you need. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4165272#4165272

I would not like to be in your position, upside down, but since you asked, it is my opinion that taking care of the 3 big "visuals" will get you farther out of the hole you're in.

I would say that in the NorthWest USA this van would go for $4000 as described with 3 or 4 people coming to look at it ( lowballers who smell blood because it's unfinished). And $6-8,000 with 20 inquiries if it looked like it was "all there" ready to go.

Good luck.
