Hi there!I have a NOS Rapid Cool oil cooler...and I'm just wondering what's the best model of oil filter I could mount on it...for my 1970 1600cc baja bug.

Features:

3/4-16 th'd

I saw some vintage pics with Pennzoil PZ-7 and Framm PH2870 and maybe(I say maybe due to blurred pictures) a Fram PH8A mounted on it.

-Pennzoil PZ-7 compares to FRAM PH43 (9-15 Valves)

-FRAM PH2870 is no more available on the market and it was replaced by the new model PH2870A compares to Pennzoil PZ-12 (22 Valves)

-FRAM PH8A compares to Pennzoil PZ-1 (12Valves)

Maybe I wrong...but can I say...more valves...better result?
Any possibility in suffocate oil flow?

Thanks!
Cheers

I don't know much about the Penzoil filter.

If you're looking at Fram, use only the HP1. It's built for higher pressures, other model fram filters can blow up from the pressure.

I have friends who've experienced this.

Or go with the K&N equivalent.

Hi there! Are you talking about this one?:

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51768

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/results.asp?PartNo=X2&imageField.x=0&imageField.y=0

This is made by ACDELCO...but seems not to have same th'd I need...

I prefer to stay on Pennzoil or FRAM...due to I'd like to keep the original vintage sponsor used on vintage desert races...

And I repeat...I have a stock 1600cc engine...not bigger or pumped...!!!

Thanks!
Cheers

Actually the th'd doesn't fit what I need...

I found the PZ-7 pennzoil compares to WIX 51068 (Thread Size:3/4-16):

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/results.asp?PartNo=PZ-7&imageField.x=0&imageField.y=0

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51068

And the FRAM2870 or 2870A compares to WIX:

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/results.asp?PartNo=ph2870&Submit=Search

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51342

That has a better Burst Pressure-PSI: 350

So I guess the best thing to consider is the burst pressure...

Thanks!
Cheers

So...maybe as polkaudio says...FRAM HP1 would be a good choice.....:

http://www.power-21.com/FramPower21i/PartDetail.aspx?b=F&pn=HP1

and the Maximum Burst Pressure (psi) is : 500 psi

Among competitors I can't find a Pennzoil reference...but I can find 2 WIX reference: 51515R or 51622

Thanks for the hint...

Cheers

The Rapid Cool kit is a "bypass" kit. It replaced the stock oil cooler with a remote oil cooler and an oil filter. You don't need a high pressure oil filter for that kit.

A high pressure filter cuch as a Fram HP1 is needed for a full flow filter setup where the filter is fed straight from the oil pump.

I had a Rapid Cool kit years ago and used a Fram PH8A filter with no problem. It's much cheaper than the HP1.

I have been using Mobil M1 for a very long time. Always check to make sure any filter you do use has a one way check in it.

MY preference is WIX brand and run long filter if you have enough room for it...

I use a PH8A with Melling pump, don't rev the motor when it's cold and you'll be fine, if you can't resist use a HP1

I use a Fram PH977A.
https://www.fram.com/parts-search/PH977A/?ref=NoIg...7%20IAC6QA
It's quite a bit taller than the PH8A, a little over 7 inches tall and has the same base dimensions as the PH8A. I don't know what it's burst pressure is though. I carry a spare filter in my on-board gear box just in case this one gets hit by a rock. The metal is pretty thin.

How much do HP1s sell for now? I have a couple that I purchased quite a few years ago that I no longer need. Just wondering whether they're worth selling or re-purposing.

HP1s have cardboard internals, so they're not worth anything in my opinion. I gave 2 away that I had before I switched to a Canton Mecca.

If their commercial value is low I'd give them away to someone that needs them.
