|
|
I have a 73 Thing with 205x70x15 tires, they rub on the fenders when cornering, more so with two people in the car. I just had a new front end, ball joints, tie rods ends and shocks installed. What's the fix? _________________ Thingman67 |

1. Wider Fenders
2. Smaller tires
3. Lift it.
My '74 had 195's on the front and 205's on the back when I got it. Now has 195's all the way around and has a lot less trouble with the rears rubbing. |

I have not actually done it yet but I understand it requires that you cut the front beam and weld in adjusters for the front (or buy one already set up). For the back, you reindex the suspension arms. Rear lift is limited by what the U-joints will take. Mine is sitting a little low in the rear so I will definitly be into that half in the not-too-distant future. |

Ray,
If you have replaced the whole front beam assembly from a donor car(beetle, ghia; not a thing) I seem to remember that they sit at a lower height than a thing beam does. This could be something to consider if the car didn't rub before you replaced all the parts. A thing has many model specific parts in the front end that are not easily swappable w/beetle parts. A thing has a beefier unit that sits higher for the off road look. Are the tires new? I run 195 x 14" and have no probs.
Either way, lifting a thing is a good idea, I think they look cooler with a nice aggressive off-road stance.
I just reindexed my rear spring plates to fix a sagging ass end and to replace all the worn out rubber bushings. It's not that fun of a job but is worth it to level out the car.
Anyway, I thought I'd throw that out there for what its worth.

GET A LIFTED SPINDLES. IT WILL LIFT YOUR SUSPENSION 2' AND WILL GIVE YOU MORE CLEARANCE. THAT'S WHAT I DID ON MINE. I AM AS HIGHEST IT CAN GO IN THE BEAM ADJUSTERS. GOOD LUCK |
