|
|
We recently found several old VWs that had been parked since 1978 up off some logging road in the middle of nowhere Washington State. Although it was quite tragic to see what used to be such nice old VWs it was also very interesting to look at. As a VW enthusiast and photographer myself it was a treat to get to see. There were three deluxe split buses, two double-door early buses, a few bugs, type 3s and few other assorted VWs.
I've got the rest of the photos posted on our site here:

Pretty cool!
Too bad though...
Those buses would have had only a slight patina if they were on my side of the state. |

George - I agree. Most of the buses were under trees in the shade, so they seemed to stay wet and mossy. They do have a pretty bold "patina" look now. |

Cool find. Man those are some sweet buses. I want that light on top of one of those buses. Cool pictures also. I love this red one, it's my new background. This one needs a good CLR cleaning and roll it

Nvdubber & Casey - You know it actually would be rather fun to make one of those drive, especially with the moss still on it. A piece of plywood might be necessary on the floor so one doesn't fall through however. |

Well, I have a little experience with trying to make a car that's been sitting for years drive.
The day I bought my 67 it hadn't been on the road since 1980 or 81. It sat on blocks in a field in Loudoun County VA for almost 30 years. Then the guy I bought it from bought it earlier this year. I'd wanted a 67 since I was about 12. We would hang out at local VW events, and he kept mentioning that he had a 67 he wanted to sell. Well, when the price finally came down to $200 I had to check it out. My wife and I went over to his house after a Cruise we all went on together. It was about 230 or 300 am, 35 degrees, and raining. I saw the car, and it didn't look THAT bad. So, I decided I could sell my Super for enough that I could make the 67 run and have a 67 instead of a Super, that would be in about the same shape. I later went back in the daylight, the day I bought and towed it home. Wow, was I ever wrong. The amount of damage letting a car sit does is almost worse then driving it every day would have done. It has rust in places I've never seen rust. The heater channels, the entire channel, were full of acorns. Mice in the headliner, under the carpet, in the engine compartment under the tar boards. Just a total mess. Even then though, I decided to fix it. You can follow it in my thread in my sig line. Next time I see a VW that's been sitting for more then a year or so, I'll take a MUCH closer look. _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

If a fender falls off in the forest and no one's around to hear it, does it still make a sound?

Look at the rear apron. Have you ever seen rust like that before? _________________ My 71 Ghia Been in my family since 1980

Oh sure, you guys find this stuff in Washington AFTER I move to Germany. Seriously though it looks like you could take the one 15 window with the mangled side, and the 23 window and make one pretty decient bus, I'm sure plenty of funky green pannels would be needed, but still worth it. _________________ Mike "Delamaize"

Talking about plywood...When ever we went TDY to Guam for 15 days while in the Navy there was a car called the Guam Bomb. It would be rented for 100.00 to us. The floors were plywood so if you had to puke just lift up one and puke. Every time the driver got in you would have to reposition the plywood. But ran good but not over 30 MPH or it would shake rattle and roll. _________________ As they say, "You never know until you ask the question."

I'm sure the OP has already received a crapload of PM's about the location of these buses or the possibility of cutting and shipping metal for them, even in that poor condition I'm sure someone will be out there in a few weeks to either retreive them or cut metal. I live in WA, have a strong running 1600cc engine I could pop into the (tan) 15 window to drive it out but I have no 5 lug Bus wheels and I probably couldn't swap tires onto the existing ones in the middle of nowhere so I guess I'll leave it to someone more qualified. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:
