what do you need to know on the dash? i can take pics of mine (all stock).
you have to remove the guages to drop the dash on, then install the guages. |

those plastic rings need to come off. they were part of the old dash pad.
take the guages out, take the plastic rings off of them, drop the new pad on, screw it downs and slip the guages back in |

Not to sound like an a$$; but come on guys... This guys asked a simple question, YES it has been asked several times...But if the first post is check the bentley..that has a tendency to discourage some people... I myself do not have a bentley and I doubt I never will, but I TRY to help those who have no knowledge...... If some of you more knowledgeable guys would be a little more helpful, and point us less fortunate people in some sort of direction instead of the usual post of get a "bentley" or "search" is your friend there might be fewer abandoned projects out there....
Ghiaman this is the best I can do... If I were more knowledgeable I would help more..

Many of us have never replaced a padded dash. I have not, in my 45 years. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

it seems like norcalvw told him everything he needs to know. just because it didn't take up a page and a half of information doesn't mean he didn't help...mike fisher is a salesman for bentley magazines. he's always pushing their products.

I have a Manual for Every Car I own! People who buy a VW, but won't buy a VW Manual are a pet peeve of mine Here. "I'll just ask the guys on TheSamba every time I need to work on my VW." Too many people with a philosophy like FreightShaker! "I'm Never buying a Manual!" _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Thanks, 69 square.
I did tell him exactly what he needed to do, but he wasnt really clear in his first post. i would say his question was warranted and a Bentley wasn't gonna help him figure out that he had the dash rings still attached to his guages.
Mike, this is for you. i pimped this photo in another thread.
I have a Bentley for every car i own, and a Bosch FI manual (just got it) and a Muir for an extra helping hand. Actually, i found alot of useful reading in the Muir book, also some misinformation.
Sexy, isn't it? |

Mike I do NOT want to turn this into a pissing match...I was not aware that you sold these manuals...I do not want to buy a manual because there are helpful people here along with other sites, and I like to dig in and get my hands dirty..... It was not meant as something personal at or to you...If that is how you took it I do apologize.... Its just that people come on here and other sites for information, and all to often I see the phrases "get a Bentley" "use the search", or its a hack... And it seems to go down from there.. There is nothing wrong with trying to make a sale but I just seem to think there is a better way of going about it.... I will be the first to say if somebody needs something you most likely have it Mike...You have some parts I'd like to have... But like a Bentley its not in the budget, so I do what I can with what I have.... With this being the case I do not post much about my car due to the fact it is refered to as a hack... But it works for me.... I've been around here for awhile and if I have something I need specific answers to I know who to PM or catch in chat to get a civil answer... _________________ 68 Type 3 Square project (needs alot)

My bad I thought in an above post someone said you sold them or something along those lines....I do have a couple of books but not a Bentley.... I do not doubt there is alot of good information in them... The point of my original post was it just seems like some people want to discourage those who are new ... I was just asking why in a bad way I guess. I always thought getting into a club or organization was for help and encouragement when needed, and not let them get put on the back burner because of something that is a simple fix to a more experienced VW enthusiast.. Again I apologize if my first post came out wrong....And to norcal vw... My hat is off to you for explaining what and why to what the original poster asked... _________________ 68 Type 3 Square project (needs alot)

Having the Bentley is like having the right tool. Seriously. I've been doing this VW Type 3 stuff for over 30 years and i still consult the Bentley and/ or parts books on every single job. Even after all this time, I still look up tuneup specs, torque specs, everything.
And no, I don't work for Bentley.
And yes- norcalvw nailed it on the dash stuff. The only thing I do differently is I do dash pads with the windshield out. WAY easier. Also, a little tip is to gently heat the replacement dash pad before installing it. Leave it out in the sun or in front of a heater or fireplace for awhile. That, or heat it with a hairdryer before installing.
If you're putting in one of the repro dashes, be prepared for a battle. They do NOT fit right. They need a lot of coaxing.
Now, as to the sliding roof- I think that ISP West has a complete parts schematic in their online catalog. I thought it was in the factory parts manual, but only part of it is. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I collect manuals.
You name it, I probably have it.
And many of the softbound ones I get, I cut the bindings and scan into digital format. So I can share them if needed. The trick is not knowing everything, but knowing where to get the information when needed. And, sometimes that is The Samba Forums.
Some of my collection of Without Guesswork books.
