I thought I would post a fix that I did to my shift rod.
We all know that after 20 years we get some slop in are shifting. I found that my slop was from the front of the shifting rod. You know those plastic covers over the ears that help the shift rod slide and help you find your gears. THEY ARE GONE
Hear is some pic of what I did.
I shift like new again!!
new kit fom van-cafe
Dont forget to grease real good!! |

He cut a piece of fuel hose and slid it over the tabs on the shift rod to replace the missing plastic guides. Looks like he used epoxy glue to hold the hose in place, maybe coated it with glue as well, for longevity?
Nice fix. _________________ 1990 GL 7-passenger

Hey thanks for the post! I'll try this out!
I've been trying to figure out what I can do with those missing ears without buying a new shift rod.

Your going to have to figure something out--the shift rods are NLA. _________________ T.K. |

I did the hose and epoxy fix, I think if this wears too quick I'll take the rod out and dip it in marine epoxy and build up the area I need to act as a bushing. |

Navy,
There's a kit available now to replace those plastic ears that did not exist when this thread started. Check Samba classified or search. Looks like a permanent solution.

There are actually a few different makers of that part in the classifieds.
I posted all of the dimensions in a thread last year for the DIY crowd as well.
The hose is a short term fix but much better options are out there. |

I have a hard time swallowing the t3 ear fix cost when all i see is $2 in parts.
Although i will waste a full day fixing my own shift rod ears with stuff i have laying around. I guess I'm not very smart, or i don't value my time very highly!!!!

well, with the type of epoxy i have available, i know i can use that hose fix and make it last for quite a long time and then if it wears down over time, i can just add more epoxy saving myself quite a few bucks as opposed to buying the ear fix. even though the ear fix is a great buy and a good thing to have, i just know i can do it for cheaper and the stuff i can use might even be stronger but i do need to make sure i have the dimensions right, so like i had originally digged this up for in the first place..is he saying 5.3 mm injection hose cut to 5/8"long? _________________ '90 Carat w/ '95 phase 1 EJ22 OBD2 conversion |
