I have a factory roll bar that i want to install in my 74 thing. Does any one have any tips on installing it? i know i have to drill holes in the floor pan for it, the only thing i am really concerned with is installing the rear portion of the bar and drilling the holes on the rear parcel shelf. How do you get to the bottom of that shelf to bolt it in or is there some trick that i am not a wear of any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you set the roll bar in the car, you should be able to mark where the holes will be drilled. Wouldn't the holes in the parcel shelf just go into the engine compartment?

I guess i really didn't look that deep into but if that rear parcel shelf comes out into the engine compartment i am all set. Is there a backing plate that should go on the bottom of the floor pan or does everyone just use heavy duty washers? Thanks for the info!

I think most people use bolts with large washers but a plate made to fit the roll bar does sound better and could be made from metal pretty easy.

OK, my undergraduate schooling was in engineering so I may be biased. I'd make plates the same size and bolt pattern as the ones on the bottom of the roll bar for all the attachment points. Hopefully, you never need its services but, if you hapened to find yourself sliding down the pavement greasey side up someday, you would want it to stay put.

Thanks for all the info!! I am going to make the backing plates it just looks like a better solution instead of the washers. The Sheet metal for the floor pans isn't the strongest so that looks like the best option. Thanks again!

I just finished installing a Thing Shop bar in my 73. I wrote an article for Thing Stuff ( a publication of type181registry.com) about the installation. Of course this was a TS bar but I suspect the article might help you. The reinforcing plates came with my bar. If you cannot find the article I would be happy to email it to you. Bill
