Any idea if I can get a spare key made for my 86 GL? I have been told in the past that I have to send away for one!?!?! Is this true? I would imagine I can to a dealership and have one made even my local hardware store should be able to do it right? Any input would be great.

Take this key blank to any good locksmith and it shouldn't be a problem for them

Any good locksmith should have a key blank already. Maybe just not a fancy one with the rubber covering.

And if you are going as far as ordering key blanks from VanCafe might
as well get them cut from the key code.

Remove both front door handles and look for a 4 digit number on one
of the "fingers" at the end of the lock barrel.

Much better results than from an old worn key.

Take a look at www.vwkey.com. I've had nothing but good experiences with him.

The website can be a bit confusing but a few emails can help get you exactly what you need.

I just did this yesterday... I swear. I bought two keys from Mark1vw in Maryland last Thursday, they came in the mail on Tuesday, and had them both cut to match the one key that I did have. All was well without having to take the door handles off of my van to get the numbers. I couldn't be happier with them... suppose I should post this in the feedback forums Rolling Eyes , oh well...

Do it. It was the best $22+ I've spent on my van, not withstanding gasoline.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=722005 This may be less confusing.

My link above^^^is NOT for the rubber headed type key... the keys that I received have hard black plastic heads. FYI

Mark does have the original keys, but he has to charge more for them.

I would suggest the key code route. Not sure why you would remove both front handles to get the code? Copies of copies over the last 22 years with wear on the keys resulted in my rear hatch NOT working with the copies. I love the idea of having an original key to start again. (Plus I rekeyed two vans to work on one key).

David,

Where did you find the locks or did you do something different? The PO for Zeno recored everything on my van which means that I have a stack of keys. I'd like to get it all back to one key for all the locks and ignition.

Thanks in advance for the help,

I just ordered two from Mark also......I want everyone to know that he turns the orders over fast. Mine are already in the mail with a tracking #.

I am cutting my own as I have a key cutting machine and key code punch machine for VW's only.......I have lot's of older key blanks, but since I never had the need to cut Vanagon keys I never kept blanks.

I have had keys cut by code in the past also but I don't like them. They original keys have a nice smooth transition between the key cuts and won't poke you when they are in your pocket. The local locksmith said thay they will literally saw thorough the ignition cylinder over time- There are many vanagons in town so he has experience with them.
Fresh OEM keys- Pic. deleted

Well, you got me there. The new code cut key is very sharp and that is not great. BUT it did cure the rear hatch lock from not working.

It's not hard to rekey your vans to work together on one key, it may not be the most secure of paths to take, but I hate carrying more keys than I have too.

Code cut keys should be run over a grinder gently and then run by a brush wheel to soften the edges and remove shards.......If your locksmith did not do this, take them back and ask them to soften the edges.....I did auto locksmith for 8 years and the locksmith I worked for had been doing it for 40 years.......His code cut keys were never sharp, and that is a lesson I learned from him. GRHS!

I'll have the lock smith smooth out my keys.

syncrodoka, the fresh OEM keys, where/how did you come to have these? Are they from the dealer? or code cut? or put away in a safe place from the time you first bought the van from the dealer?
