Hi,

My heater (front) fan is stuck in the 3 position (it works, but is jammed at full speed). (I have an 87 westy).

I know it will break if I force it.

I can pull the knob completely.

But I can't change the speed.

Any idea? Is that common?

Sounds like the resistor took a dump, or is it on all the time no matter what the switch position? Check this out......

Mine did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Switch was stuck on "3" and frozen. Fan ran on high.

Had a new switch and replaced the old "stuck" one.

Fan works fine now.

Took the old switch apart and a piece of plastic fell into the back, locking the switch on high speed.

No big deal. The switch is cheap. Not bad for a 20 year old part. In hindsight, I would replace the fan switch for the rear blower, while your in there.

Also, you can verify if it is indeed the swich by swapping it with the one for the rear (if it's good).

That's exactly it. I just cannot move the lever/switch from position 3.

Is that hard to do? I don't have access to my van/bentley right now.
Do I have to pull part of the dash, or it is fairly easy from the outside.

I will be dealing with this same scenario after replacing the blower motor....I will watch this thread and keep you appraised of what I find or you can check my thread out. I will not get back to it until Monday.......taking a day off to rest and recuperate and see Leo Kotke in Concert! Cool

On my 91 all I gotta do is pull out the radio! unplug and pull from clip. Your switch is toast.

Pull the knob out, slide all the levers to the left, pull back the right side of the HVAC panel a little, then with a small screwdriver or the like you can pop out the switch. Once it's out, the electrical connector can be pulled off the back of the switch to swap it out Very Happy

In a pinch, the fan switches on the front and rear on my 86 are the same part. You may be able to swap the two until you get your replacement.

Good info DG.
I am in Montreal. The van is ready to get back to storage. I think it will wait for spring to install.
It happened in the last hour of the Montreal- Orlando-Montreal trip at Christmas.
When I needed it to clear the snow/ice from the windshield. At least it got stuck in the right position.

Done!

Got the van out yesterday.

As one said: pull all 4 levers to the left, pull out the fan knob. easy out.
ply the plastic tab/plaque with a thin screwdriver and you should see the switch. easy to take out with the screw driver.

For the rear one. It takes again just a thin screw driver (and to take out the fan knob first.).

I switch front and rear. I checked the jammed one. it melted a bit in the inside. waiting for the replacement.
