|
|
I've been a lurker for a while, but I've finally got a chance to correctly introduce myself.
My 64 turkis/blue white standard has been in the family since '68, when my dad bought it from Orange County Dodge (when I find the original bill of sale, I'll scan and post it.)
Having just returned home from vietnam, he had to "get away" like many people, and semi-lived it in for 5 years, making 30+ round trips from his home town of Clinton, IA and California.
(sorry for thepicture quality).
Surprisingly, the bus stayed free from many of the typical era "hacks," but in typical fashion, at the end of the five years the rear bumper and rear interior were missing. Scoops, wood paneling interior, and not-too-bad of a bed were installed. (I'm saddest about the scoops, but that's ok. I'd still like to find correct interior panels, but como green/phosphor with big hatch is slightly hard to find. I have seats.)
These pictures were taken at the end of '73, and strangely, most of the damage the bus has today (other than dogleg and rocker rust) was already there (brother and sister in pictures):
Damage that was there then but not much worse now:
-Windshield frame rust (very pitted, but I just pulled them for the first time, and not through anywhere)
-Rear apron rust (not spread noticeably more, 37 years later. Any idea as to what caused it in the first place?)
-rust on VWoA mirrors
-various dents and scratches
It ended up parked in a field near his family home in Iowa, where my dad went through and got rid of many other cars, but could never get rid of this one. Finally, in 1990, he towed it up to Madison, WI (where I live), rebuilt the engine, brakes, etc. and got it back on the road.
Took it on camping trips, had a lot of fun. Here's my birthday party in 91:
And again a year later:
not related, but my family from the same trip:
Sadly, six months after this, my dad died of a heart attack, and left the bus to 'me.' Of course, I was six, and had no idea what to do, so it sat until I got my license. I started driving at 16, but with no 'help' with the bus, I soon ended up overheating it and pulling some studs out of the case. Sat another few years until last summer, when I became friends with 66busman on the forums here, and he gave me the motivation it took to get it on the road. I put 6000 miles on it this summer, and it was great.
My bus and 66busman's bus at dubsinthevalley in oshkosh, wi:
Thanks for reading this, I understand it's kinda long, I hope you liked it. |

Thanks. This spring is for rust repair, I'm saving up for a welder and some good metal to weld in the rockers/doglegs/etc now. It's pretty bad from the fiberglass insulation that was behind the woodgrain paneling, but luckily the frame of the bus is perfect. Never seen roadsalt. |

Nothing like the beauty of original paint. If I had half the buses my grandpa had I'd flip. Good luck with it!

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

Loved the pics and the story, thanks.
I was born in '65 and the youngest of 5 kids. My dad had a 63 split walkthrough. Mom put me in a cardboard box between the front seats, no belts.
Reminds me of that period of life. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

wow, phenominal story, to say, that dent was put there when dad hit a tree, or misjudged a pole, or some idiot at the grocerystore.
to be able to point at everything and say my dad did that, and have a story to share is awesome. keep up with the bus. it has alot of sentimental value to you, glad you shared the pics and story with us. _________________ proud owner of a defunct 1979 sunroof kombi

He's in many of those pics, the man with the mustache.
Definitely not getting rid of it. Not going to do any mods that aren't bolt on, and even then I wouldn't even mod the original parts I'd take off. Luckily there's over ten split busses in a junkyard near me. |

Cool story, Wish I had pictures of the vw's my folks had.
I can't remember the panel they had, me and sis used to just roll all over the back of that thing flying down the freeway. |

Some more recent pictures of the bus, at Dubs in the Valley.
Camping in the Wal Mart parking lot:
At the show:
Driving:
At our favorite pizza place, Glass Nickel (Oshkosh branch)
Driving north on Hwy 40, speed limit 65:
Gas station stop (my bus ran out of gas about a mile from this station, that was fun)
That's all I've got. This upcoming summer will be busy for us, as we plan on making trip out to Portland in our buses. Great vintage pics, bagpipe. _________________ '66 SO-42
