Right where I catch the train into downtown Denver, I happened to actually look around for once yesterday and spotted a gunmetal grey 7-passenger Syncro in somebody's backyard. I drove down the alley to investigate further and saw that it appears to be in great shape, bodywise, but looks to have been sitting awhile.

I immediately daydreamed about a Zetec in the back and an Adventurewagen top, then snapped back to the reality that I need to do at least $2k worth of work to my own Vanagon before next summer.

Samba member? I feel nosy asking, but they're getting rarer by the moment!

Feels like striking gold, doesn't it? I found a backyard Syncro that had been parked for a couple of years but I had just bought a Westy and could not convince my bride that the Syncro was essential.

Actually, she has gotten into Westy ownership and has been instrumental in many of the upgrades and improvement projects and she digs camping. If I had REALLY made a case for getting that other one (and believe me, it was cheap for a syncro) she most likely would have let me get it. But I do not need a syncro, no matter how much I might think I want one, and a marriage doesn't make it to 24 years without a little work. Not buying a cheap syncro is a lot of hard work.

It's gone! I have no idea how they even got it out of that yard, it had appeared to have been basically fenced-in.

Hopefully it went to a Sambanista!

Yeah, I've been keeping my eye on a tree-damaged aircooled Westy in the 'hood and it suddenly disappeared after a couple of years. Poof! There went my wheel trim rings and single headlight grille.
