|
|
Hi there,
As some of you might know I am renovating an old roof rack for my 67 Beetle.
I have a few questions for the ones of you who have renovated your roof rack:
- What kind of substance should I use on the wooden slats? What color is closest to the original, reddish, clear or ?
- I have a repro sticker to be put on one slat. Where should the sticker go? Front or back / left or right, near the Made in Germany marking on the rack itself?
- Also, I would be glad if you could give me the exact measurements between the legs of the roof rack in front, middle and rear. The roof rack I have has been bent a little, enough to not fit on the roof.
Thanks, Al _________________ 1967 European 6V Volkswagen 1300 Beetle |

I purchased an empi rack and, of course, the wood is junk. I've been debating what to replace it with as well. Teak has been suggested to me a couple of times but I would prefer something lighter. |

I forgot to mention that I have had the wooden slats made for me as close to the original as possible, out of oak. _________________ 1967 European 6V Volkswagen 1300 Beetle |

Over the holidays I broke mine down, drilled out the rivets; pulled the wood. Sanded and refinished the wood with clear varnish (6-8 coats) and painted the steel with rattle-can gloss grey. I put surgical tube on the feet and put it back together with stainless machine screws and nuts in place of the rivets. Definitely not museum quality restoration, but I like it. As well, did volkswagon ever make these or are they all aftermarket and knock offs? Mine wasn’t particularly well made, and I looked for a manufacturer stamp and found none.

How about the slats themselves. Do the all lie on the center tube?
On my rack they are about inch away in each and but in the middle the slats rest on the tube. Should the surface be flat from the front end to the back or should the surface sway as the roof rack itself?
Sorry, a lot of questions but I'm trying to make the rack as original as possible.
Thanks, Al. _________________ 1967 European 6V Volkswagen 1300 Beetle |

You might want to a search on roof racks in the Accessory section. There are some threads in there that talk about redoing a rack.
As for the measurements, I would just worry about making it fit your roof correctly. The are easy to bend into shape. |
