|
|
I'm in the process of installing a Megasquirt FI system in my bus. I need to locate the MS ECU somewhere now and it would be ideal if I could just mount it on the firewall.
The only concern with this is the engine bay temperatures may be too high for the ECU. This is especially a concern when in traffic jams in high ambient temperatures. Does anyone know how hot it can get during these conditions? I guess it will never really be that hot since the engine is continuously sucking out air and thus replenishing the engine bay with new ambient air.
The alternative is to mount it in the closet where the spare tire well is, but in this location it will use closet space and it will be less easy to wire and connect the vacuum lines to it. Besides this, the closet can probably get pretty hot as well when that side of the bus is in the sun in high ambient temperature conditions.
What are your thoughts? _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD

Can you put it where the current ECU is located?
I don't know the dimensions of the mega squirt, I'm guessing smaller? |

Being as he's in the Nederlands, he likely doesn't have an ECU.
I seriously can't imagine that the engine bay would get too hot for the ECU. If it does, you need more than a Mega Squirt. if it's too hot for the ECU, it's too hot for any other electrical components in it.
If you're really worried about it, is the wiring harness long enough to mount the ECU behind one of the inner panels in the luggage area? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

full westy? what about the cabinet up high?
that said, the engine compartment does get quite hot at times, esp idleing in traffic, but I don't think it's too hot for the MS. most electronics are rated to the 70-100 c range, although I am sure you can ask megasquirt what they think, there maybe some sensitive items in there, who knows. Also maybe just mount a fan on it/in the enclousre? _________________ [email protected]

Thought about that too, but that would suck in dust, which also isn't a good thing.
However, if you give it a thought, is your firewall ever too hot to touch? I'd just rather have it in the engine bay. The original ecu location isn't an option since the original ecu will remain in place. (Yes, i do have L-jet, my bus is US import)
I asked this question on the MS forums as well and they told me the components are rated up to 210F, however that's max operating temperature and some components generate heat and with higher ambient temperatures they won't cool as effectively.
I will fab the wiring harness myself, I think I'll just go with the engine bay install and see what happens. _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD

when i mounted mine i cut open an original ecu and installed the mega squirt there . than i mounted it into the stock location. i think u are running a redundant system . so make another hatch next to the original one . anywhere else i think would not work. to the right it is susceptible to rain left same thing. only outer option would be under the rear bed than u would need to run very long wires through the fire wall next to the gas tank than make a hole inthe sheet metal under the bed _________________ currently 71 super auto-stick, 73 ghia, 71 yellow ghia , a 68 square w71 fi, a 77 bus station wagon deluxe. and finaly finaly a 74 riveria with volvo pawer .ITS AN ADDICTION!!! |

oh oh i got a good idea. u can mount it to the inside of the inspection hatch. the big round black one. than u have protection from the elements u are close to the oem ecu and it will be accessable. oh ya i like that idea _________________ currently 71 super auto-stick, 73 ghia, 71 yellow ghia , a 68 square w71 fi, a 77 bus station wagon deluxe. and finaly finaly a 74 riveria with volvo pawer .ITS AN ADDICTION!!! |

Yea, I thought of that one too but there is actually less than an inch of clearance between the inside of the cover and the ECU. Too bad, because it would have made for a nice spot.
I don't really look forward to cutting another slot next to the OG ecu, besides I'm not sure if there is enough room. May cause some clearance issues with the filler neck. _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD

what about behind the gas tank firewall to the right of the tank? where the Eberspacher heater ducting is routed on factory installed units...?
I'd put a pic but aparently photobucket is porn here at work
EDIT - ah, lets go this route. pic

A ACVW bus has about the lowest engine compartment temperature of any vehicle you can find. Don't know what temps the megasquirt can handle, but if it can do any other car it should be able to handle the temperatures likely to be seen in a Bay. |

What he say.
In Death Valley at 125* ambient, my spare tire well surface was less than 130* and the carbs were a gloriously cool 97* due to all that latent heat of evaporation occurring within.
At maximum heat-soak after a desert hot freeway run, my engine compartment side surfaces have never exceeded 134* ever. Fan housing got up to 159* in Beatty Nevada once . . . . .

Thanks for the input everyone!
Colin, thanks for the measured data. I'm just going to mount it in the engine bay, judging by the opinions and data I think it should be safe. Proof of that will come once we reach Cape Town _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD
