I'm not sure I follow. How exactly do the muffs prevent dust from getting into the heat exchangers?

Because, according to VW, drawing air from the top of the boxes prevents dirt kicked up by the tires from being sucked into the engine compartment.

When/where did VW say that? I'm not trying to be a jerk; I've just never heard somebody quote a VW source for an explanation.

Also not trying to be a jerk - but with the huge volume of anecdotal baggage attached to the earmuffs, any information being presented as fact requires an accompanying citation.
