Hi everyone,
Does anyone have a picture of the shift rod bushing actually installed. I don't need the diagram, I need to see it installed. My '64 bus came without one. This is the bushing on the front under the shifter.
Thanks
Moderator edit:
Here's a shop manual and a real photo of a new one installed:

Now on to the other shift rod bushings? Does anyone have a pic of the middle bushing and does it have a clip somewhere? Also, not sure but does a '64 bus have a rear shift rod bushing also?
Thanks. |

in this pic found in the search above, the bushing is installed incorrectly (a quick look at the diagram would show this).
the snap ring end is supposed to face forward and the slot in the bushing is supposed to face to the side.
also, this area needs to be greased liberally.

The back one has no clip.
You can check out the parts manuals @

Thanks Hazetguy! You saved me. I was about to put the shift rod back in and the bushing would have been on backwards. There's got to be a way to delete that gallery pic to save other people from future problems.
Thanks again. |

I edited the gallery entry above with a little note and a direction to this thread for the correct orientation. _________________ How to Post Photos

Here is the one that I am replacing in my 65 westy. Hopefully installed correctly. And, yes, I had to cut off the coupler between the front and rear rod with a cut off tool. It was too rusted to budge with anything. It's going back together as soon as I get a new coupler.

You might want to go to wolfsburg west and do some searching. Can start here:
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211711155C
And I think the part 19 you are referencing is the bushing for the front of the shift rod on a late 66-67 which are different than the 62. Assume you are asking for your 62 bus. |

If you go to the next page, and find the entry next to #19, it describes what that part is for, you will see that it is used from ch 216 028 112. So it does not apply to an earlier bus like a '62
If you look at the same page next to #17, you will see how many it takes, and that there was a different version from VIN 835 088, so make sure you get the right kind.

Thanks for the Clarafication
ok so I have read that I need two of that #17 bushing and two rubber boots but the diagram only shows one of each. I am not talking about the one bushing with the clip for up front. So where do the extra ones go? _________________ April 3rd 62 standard mgr/pw

If you're talking about the shuttlecock things and the bellows type boots, they go on the shift rod under the cargo floor. You have to pull the rod out the back. Two bushings suspend the rod inside the tube and the boots go on each end. I put worm clamps on the boots, too. |

My front bushing is missing. Can the front bushing be replaced without removing shift rod? Looks like bushing is split? Am I correct ? My Bus is a 65 is that the year they changed or 66? |

that bushing can be changed without removing the shift rod. i did remove the shifter and rear shift coupler from trans and rod. that thing is a bitch to get between the bracket and rod. i pulled on the edge of the bushing and pulled it through rotating the bushing while getting it to sit in the groove. clean any rust from the rod to get an easier fit and lightly grease it so it doesnt move too much.i just opened the snap ring and then closed it back when done. good luck _________________ once you realize im not impressed we will get along just fine |

Thanks for this thread and in particular to Hazetguy, solved a problem that had been bugging me for days. I had purchased a bush kit that included the later type front bush. I had a look at installing the correct bush earlier, but it didn't look right. However the photographs relieved me of my ignorance! Gear change now sweet... |

Hi
I'm having a similar problem with my '65 11W Bus that I'm assembling now (sorry if I'm messing up the thread...).
It seems like my stickshifter is too short, or the bracket which the front shift rod goes through is too far down,
because the bottom of the shifter tends to slip out of the front shift rod "seat". Any hints?
Is it possible to mount a "short shifter" kit on a bus? (I think this will pull the shifter downwards?)
As I understand, the '65 doesn't have the "guiding pin" in the front of the shift rod to hold it in the right position vertically.
Cheers from Bergen, Norway
