thx I also found a few other replacements a bit less expensive as well
VW part numbers
switch 171-927-145A(smaller Green bit in vc pic),
switch on gear selector that touches the contacts on 311-927-147B
http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=171927145A

contact carrier plate w/ red wires 311-927-147B (White plastic in the vc pic)
http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=311927147B

lots o sources for the contact carrier plate ...
not so many for the switch on the gear selector
NAPA ECHLIN ECH NS6827
http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=ECHNS6827_0168435407

and
borg warner ns38045
and

STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # NS334
http://www.standardbrand.com/Online%20Catalogs-eCatalog/Content.aspx
also looks like the same contact carrier plate used in
Volkswagen Quantum (88-82)
Volkswagen Rabbit (83-79)
Volkswagen Scirocco (89-84)
Volkswagen Vanagon (91-80)

available via rockauto

Will the switch kit work on a 1973?
http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_775

The contact has worn through on mine and the springs fell out. I can only find the white part that all the wires connect to. I just bypassed it for now but I would like to fix it so I can have reverse lights and only have it start in P and N.
