I need some help with a engine problem....

The engine is a 1776 dual port, mild cam, and mild rockers. i tried to get the engine running today using a 34pict carb and a vacuum advance dizzy. I was able to get the engine to start (at wide open throttle) and run only when throttling it. As soon as i quit the engine would sputter out.

timing is correct, valves are adjusted, points were adjusted....

I tried adjusting the carb back and forth, replaced the fuel pump, the distributor with a mechanical advance distributor with the same result.

any suggestions? Is a 34pict carb to small?

as always, thanks for the help!

you got voltage on the cut off solenoid?

It should run.. will it maintain a constant rpm (say 3000) or does it die unless you make gas shoot in via the accel pump?

rebuild the carb.
make sure the idle cut off is working. try another one if you can.
sounds like the idle circuit is not working right.

no, it's not too small.

up the main jet a bit while you're rebuilding it.

i pulled the carb apart and cleaned everything, Its basically new... not quite but almost. The cut off solenoid is working ( i can hear it click back and forth when power is turned on.)

it will run at a constant high rpm for just a bit, not long. It has to have the accel pump throttled back and forth to stay running....
My first thought was it was not getting gas from the pump, but after trying another fuel pump, and an electric one with the same result im guessing its the carb...

would anything else yield this result aside from the carb?
thanks again!

is this an OG carb or a repop (bocar, EMPI)?

do you have access to another carb to try?

if it's a brosol you may have just got one of the "bad" ones.

assuming you did a thorough job rebuilding the carb and put it back together correctly...
the only other thing i can think of that would cause a symptom like that would be a BIG vacuum leak--like in the manifold.
so test for leaks before you throw in the towel on the carb
