ok. as of now these are my options
1. buy used fi motor for 650 shipped
2. buy fi off of that motor and harness
3. buy a 914 with 4 extra motors for 290 plus trailer rental and gas
4. buy donor square with fi for around 1k |

I thought you could weld the mag cases? Isn't the space behind number 3 cylinder welded on mag cases sometimes?
This isn't the pic I was looking for, but this case was welded.

You can tig it. but with special very expensive tig rod.
My guy that does my heads can do them, but he has not done one for years, and does not like to do them.
It would be hard to find some one that is set up to do them. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

some of the expensive MIG welders might be able to do it with special wire and stuff, but I don't know for sure. When I took my welding class, we did go over the different rods available (for TIG) so you can do more exotic metals. I asked my teacher specifically about doing Magnesium cases (he used to be a dubber himself) and the look of horror was enough to crush any ideas I had about fixing up old cases

...just take it to a reputable vw shop already. that way it can be done by someone who knows what they are doing. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

I'm going to make an assumption that the FI has been removed, and you're basically looking at a long block in the engine bay. If I'm wrong, then you'll have to remove the FI runners and IAD (Intake Air Distributor), along with the AAR unless you're using a low pressure electric fuel pump, then it can stay where it is.
However since you have a 72, you're going to need to change the breather box, and do something with the ports (short tubes) in the cylinder heads.
Anyway, you'll need a set of carbs, dual port intake manifolds, a fuel pump (mechanical or low pressure electrical), and carb linkage. If you decide to go with a mechanical fuel pump, you'll also need the bakelite spacer, and a fuel pump push rod that matches the pump you buy (try and get it for a generator, as that was what the 67 and earlier cars used).
The choice of carbs will also be yours, as some here prefer the Solex carbs (unfortunately they'll probably need rebuilding), or weber 34 ICT carbs. If you go with the webers, get them as a kit from CB Performance, as they'll be jetted pretty close for your engine, and have a balance tube (it's actually a hose) which our engine like. They'll also come with everything you need to install them, except the fuel pump.
You'll have to remove the stock t-3 electric fuel pump that's located under the fuel tank (usually on the right side of the beam), and route a new fuel line from the tank to the left fuel tube in the pan. Then you can add a fuel filter in the rear along side the trans (or put it under the tank like it was), as I prefer to filter the fuel after it goes thru the tunnel with carb motors. It also makes it easier to change, as you have more room to work. The next thing will be to remove the power wire that goes to the FI relay from the battery. This kills the power to the rest of the FI system that can be left in place, or removed if you want. If the car still has the FI wiring harness still in the car, you'll want to remove it and the ECU, and unplug the 3 or 4 wires that connect it to the car's wiring harness. The rest of the car's wiring can remain just as it is. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Bob- doesn't he have to also replace the two studs on his case with longer ones so he can mount a mechanical fuel pump?
Also- make sure you change ALL fuel hose on the entire car with new stuff, and use "fuel injection" type hose clamps. Whatever hose is on there is likely to be cracked, or soon to be. |

the previous fuel lines are toasted becasue the mechanic who replaced them last, instead of using clamps with screws to tighten them on the fittings, used wire and wraped it around the line and twisted it tight like a twist tie hah then it caught on fire.
anyways, i got my wiring harness and now im looking for the 2 fuel injectors on the left side, and im pretty sure thats it, these are the new parts im buying
alt
fuel pump
dist-wires
hoses
belt
thinking about replaxcing the oil pump while i got the motor out
also any suggestions on dropping the motor? i have the haynes
how do the wires that controll the tail lights get back to the tail? where exactly do they run through the car? |

You have to remove both rear fenders to access the tail light wiring. Don't miss the tiny screw under the hatch rubber. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Welding a VW case is kind of like trying to weld a Molotov cocktail. You'd better have the right equipment, excellent skills, and brass balls. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
