I blew all my dough converting my dori van to a subaru 2.2. That shouldnt effect the import of this thread as the muffler is limited to the bay provided by vw.
I found the muffler provided in the kit I bought sucked terribly.
It was too small and too restrictive. it hissed when I got up to 3k rpm.
so I sawzalled it off and went hunting at the boneyard today.
I had been looking the last 2 nites for an online solution, but I needed dimensions and some way to scale it out.
the boneyard yielded a great candidate in the 1980's ford f150/f250. there were at least 6 loafing around there. I got one with an almost new muff on it.
this muff is 25" long, 6" dia round shape like vanagon, with 2-1/4" offset ins and outs. the offsets are opposed. perfect! and a hacksaw plus 17.00$
otd got it in my shop. free coke too.
everyone wants 150.00+ for the puny vanagon muffler. this will last at least 2 years. hell, the engine is a grandpa too.
it revs to 5500 as normal. just drove it an hour ago and it is quuiiet!!!
and funny thing...my idle down problem is gone too. It would hang around 1800 rs instead of 500 like it does now. It doesnt even need to warm up to idle down now.
I had a stainless 2-7/8" tube elbow I had tigged up for the intake that I eliminated, replacing it with a bellows for vibration. that made a great muff tip.
