Just about everyone refers to referring to the Bently which I think must be some kind of manual? What the heck is it and do I need it and how can I get it? a mere mortal female

It is a must have for any Vanagon owner. It, and new fuel lines are the first thing you purchase as a new Westy owner. A Bentley is worth its weight in gold.

Well I already had ruptured fuel lines on my shake down 4000 mile trip. I've just sent an email to the above addy and it is my intent to buy. Thanks all. Glad I asked.

| While I agree that the Bentley is an essential resource, it's layout is abysmal. What possessed them to split up the engine sections the way they did????? Come on boys, one section covering the entire air-cooled engine, one for the diesel, one for the 1.9, one for the 2.1 [bangs head on desk]... |

Ruptured fuel line sounds scary...nothing burned I hope. Have you checked the condition of your on board fire extinguisher?
Where did the fuel line rupture, what sort..brand name hoses are you running on.

I think the one thing people forget about the Bentley is
it was written for mechanics, not owners

If you can buy one online for under 65.00, youlle score. Finding one in a thrift store is possible as well if youre not in a hurry.
they retail new for up to 85.00. I got mine thru amazon for 48.00 plus 6.00 s/h.
I call it the bentagon book, our wrench bible. |

Timwhy the attitude? We're all friends here. Don't ruin our vanagon buzz.
As far as the Bentley is concerned, I wish they would have printed more volumes. Broken it down a little more. More detail. I don't care how skilled a mechanic you are, you couldn't rebuild one of these engines with just the info from the Bentley.

It will be for my mechanic but I'll also keep it. I didn't know anything about olf fuel lines and I don't have a sense of smell but someone said they smelled gas. I was taken on a flat bed to an established VW Doktor in Louisville, Kty.
They were the original fuel lines and one ruptured in the middle of 16 lanes of traffic that was stopped. I managed to get off to the inner shoulder as a car behind me was waving me over. When the Doktor replaced the first line he tested the second and got what he expected to get, it ruptured too. All replaced, mixture adjusted, new spark plugs and I was out of there in a few hours and it cost much much much less than I had expected or that it would have been in Canada.
Again it might have something to do with female travelling alone. What I don't tell them is I am an Irish White Witch named Zelda.
I consider myself extremely fortunate that of two breakdowns my CAA+ allowed me to be taken to old VW specialists. Also that nothing really bad happened. Not having a sense of smell is a serious bummer tho! My mechanic might be feeling bad that he missed the old fuel lines. He put on 2 new belts even though both appeared in good shape.
Now I hang out in Samba and I'm learning by reading and asking some questions. Thanks to you all.

A bit off topic, but another road trip essential is the Roadhaus North American list of rated VW shops. You need either web access or can print a hard copy. It's very useful when you need to find a quality mechanic in a strange town.

one trick I do is print to a .PDF and carry a copy on my flashdrive, that way wether I have net access or not I can access alot of my 'saved' VW articles and data.
also you have it right Simba, every VW owner SHOULD have the BENTLY as we can't expect our emergancy mechanics to know our vehicles, but the manual will go along way to getting us back on the road in some foreign town. even though we travel in groups, I have one Mine & Mom's campers.

Does buying the Bentely mean your not going to be selling your Van?? I see you have it up for sale on the Samba.....$12.000 and some change.
