Being a college student on a limited income, living in Maine (winters), I just had to let it go. I just cant keep up two cars and I cant bring myself to drive my van in the winter with all the stuff they put on the roads up here. Its a beautiful body from Texas, I was the first one to register it outside of Texas, the is no seam rust what so ever, under windows or anything.
But I sold it to a good guy. A brother in my fraternity told me if I ever though of selling it to tell him first. Well hes graduating this year and has wanted one of these since he was 13. He plans on doing all the things I wanted. complete engine rebuild and everything. Already has a nice car that's completely paid off, and plans to have this for his summer vehicle. I will turn him onto this great site, but believe me, i will be sticking around.. As soon as my circumstances allow it, I will be back into the vanagon scene. And I plan on keeping TheSamba tabbed on the top of my browser, and learn as much as I can, so my next van wont be such a "impulse buy". I hope to find something real nice, maybe a syncro, in cali or another southern state, fly down and bring it home.. Maybe make a road trip out of it with some friends. Get a junker, drive it down and scrap it, then pick up the vanagon and head home.
One good thing is I never named it, so its not a he or she, it's and 'it'. Less personal attachment.

I pledged Sigma Nu and was initiated 12/04/09. Probably one of the best things I have done in college. Tim, I'm assuming you are in a fraternity as well, which one? Did you go to school in Maine?
That picture was taken on the final day of Buses By The Buoy. If it was taken in the other direction there would be a couple dozen or more Vanagons and Bay windows. there was even a nice splitty there.
The funny thing is, the though of moving so I could drive a vanagon year around and not feel bad about it, has crossed my mind several times. Maybe after college. But we'll see, I like Maine, and there would have to be another reason to leave. Maybe a nice paying job offer. who knows.. _________________ '85 Vanagon GL |

Sigma Nu terrific. Yes I went to college in Maine and pledged Kappa Delta Phi ( An educational fraternity...right!) It probably explains why I sell booze for a living.
I thought that the scenery in your picture looked familar, here are a couple more pics of your van from that weekend as well as shots from our Caravan up Sebago Lake.
You can pick out the Splitty(nice) that you mentioned in one of the pics.

Did you go to USM? There is a Kappa Delta Phi chapter here. I don't live on campus, so I don't know many brothers from other fraternities. But I know quite a few of my brothers know KDP's.
Seeing those pics makes think twice. But as long as the current buyer follows through I wont feel bad. I know he has the capability to keep it nice, make it better. Once I graduate, I completely plan on getting another van, but I think a westy is more suiting. _________________ '85 Vanagon GL |

Yeah I believe he intends to stay in maine, he made a comment about only driving it 5 months a year. So he plans to store it for winters.
The BBTB is usually in September, right? _________________ '85 Vanagon GL |
