So I've been lurking and posting a bit on here since way back in 2001 when my 74 vert was being built - Anyway I'm switching to the Bay world and as things go I'll need your helps! Here's a few pics to see whats what. Plans are - nothing crazy but it'll take time!
I thank you in advance for any stupid questions I have as well as missed topics (IE I searched for .... but spelled it wrong) -
PICS in camper gallery sneakyjack 1974
m code
AC unit
I hope the pics worked - PLEASE let me know your thoughts and likes dislikes.
Future plans - (And things always change $$$)
Keep interior sink fridge stove (need to confirm working ness of all)
There has been debate over real color - Ravenne green or ? I plan to go Bali Yellow.
Add a wood floor
Swap dual carbs for solex
put tire on front - nose
keep rims the same - powdercoat - tires debateable
LOTS of por 15 (its not that rusty but add where I can - por 15 that is)
repaint top white
replace canvas (not sure best one but been reading)
Dual batteries considering Optima - but still reading on that
Other "things" - I can't think of
I must note I am the planner and I have someone (who has done rebuilds on vans, things, ghias and bugs and has all the tools, lifts, knowledge etc) else working on it - but I will be there along the way and will need to "fix" her as she gets rolling - I have the idiot guide from my vert time and got the bentley too.
Anyway let the posting commence - I know boards can be tough to interpret "feelings" so feel free to hurt mine - I can take it!
good bad ugly

Don't waste your money on an Optima battery....they used to be good batteries....but those days are long over. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

thanks thus far keep em coming (I know its only been a few)
I hear ya on the Ravenne green paint code - just maybe to neon for me (I've heard it grows on ya) As far as Optima Batteries - agreed they are costly - prob go with sealed marines/deep cycles or something similar from Sears. I'll get more technical as IT goes. - Anyone ever fix the stand up ac units to work?- I'm not planning on doing it but just wondered if anyone went there. There is no blower under the dash or anything maybe it was never there or maybe it was ripped out. Thanks thanks thanks! _________________ Nothin left to do....

M Code decoder is wrong... 74/75 Westfalias are Bali Yellow L62H. Ravenna Green L65K is close, but more green. If you want the exterior to match the interior, use L62H.
Here's my '75 to give you some insight to how it looked from the factory (my interior setup is slightly different than yours, with the extra seat on the driver's wall).

thanks on pics - sweet ride..
Yep Bali Yellow L62H is the plan - Hope to gut it and get to paint soon. The engine was smogged (she lived in Cali a bit before coming back home to NY) so engine's out of the bay and gotta be toyed with. Single solex is the plan there.
I appericiate all the reponses so quick like and any pics too! _________________ Nothin left to do....

Yup it's bali yellow. Close to ravenna green but not quite. I'm parting a bus exactly like yours right now. That's my favorite interior design and I'm using everything but the sink. That's where my 73 down jumpseat is. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

That's the optional set up for 74. It's a stock part that westphalia added. It's pretty well executed and not a total hack job like most other aftermarket units out there. I've got a complete set just like this if anyone's interested. It uses cabin air and is engine driven like most modern a/c units. _________________ One day as a lion, or a lifetime as lamb

do you have any pictures of the components? like how much cabinet space is taken up? I imagine it must be the same compressor that is used on the front a/c units |

On the AC there is a compressor in the engine bay and then on the underside there a few fresh air in takes - there is one with a screen grate on it near the propane tank under slider pic above. As of now no compressor will stay I'll probably leave the thing above the sink just for giggles and questions. Fun stuff - wish it could be an easier fix for AC but I guess its one less thing to deal with.
I'll look for engine pic / compressor shot. Compressor is to the left of the engine, close to bumper, near driver side rear signal and battery area. _________________ Nothin left to do....

In regards to color and Hazetguy I have read through the forums on the bali yosemite ravanne color code and am still confused. Actually when I got the van it was one of the first things I read. That said and after reading through the paint code charts and debates and everything I figured Bali yellow is a color I like and if it has a bit of clash then what can I do it will be the 3rd color for the bus anyway so be it. Again (and soon I'll stop typing thanks) I really appreciate any and all input on this van and I hope I can help others as time goes on!
engine less smog the ac compressor (hard to tell lower left) I know bad pic
Ac look lower left again hard to see
Random Door panel question
I assume this was replaced as they are usually green and there is a vent underneath near latch to door strike plate - I am having the panels re done - So I am guessing I should re open them to allow air flow? I plan to send these panels as a template to a friend to recut and design. _________________ Nothin left to do....

Congratulations on the Westy.
I have a 74 Westy that could be the close cousin of yours. Ours has the same interior and exterior color.
We pulled the sink and icebox out of ours, pulled out the green carpet and found holes in the floor and seat stands. So, we have been welding new sections in place.
Good luck with your Westy. |

AC unit from brochure - I grabbed this from this site a bit ago -
I remember seeing the same unit in a van picture "somewhere" it has a big Phish sticker on it.
I didn't see the the "adjustable thermostat by driver seat" control either.
AC maybe rarest - van also came with cots and bucket with toilet seat - but I think the bucket and toilet seat were just dropped in there by PO not Vw branded or a yellow bucket.
Additionally - Anyone got an extra passenger side mirror they want to send/sell me in good shape for this van? _________________ Nothin left to do....

Some ac pics (sorry about the iphone thats all I had) and the van is at the paint place for minor metal replacement, nose fixin' and Bali yellow paint for outside, white for pop top. Everything's out except the AC blower unit and dash steering. Interior Panels soon to be refabricated.
AC
ac area above the sink (unit still in van too many things to pull out)
seats and bench out
good times now to get the engine apart and running and then painted.
Oh yeah that tranny, and brake thing too! and maybe some electrical!!! _________________ Nothin left to do....
