For some reason the previous owner welded shut the horn grills on original bullet fenders.. I have done all the measurements as far as the arch and also they do have the bulge at the running board. So these are not fake especially since the bullets are spot welded in..

anyways my question is should i cut out the holes or leave them filled? I know its really up to me but my car isnt exactly going to be a show car.. Just wonder how hardcore vw heads will react to bullets without horn grills?

is it weird?

Either fix them or sell them and buy a pair with the horn grills.

Are you sure they were filled? If so, you should be able to see the patch job from the rear.

I think I have seen split fenders that didn't have a hole in them from the factory, but they still had the slots for the round horn grills.

definitely patched cuz the fenders are down to the raw metal.. also one fender has two LP holes drilled in below the head light.. who ever owned these was a retard.. probably done in the 80's.. other then that these fenders have no dents or filler.. i just need to figure out how to cut the horn holes in the correct shape..

Do you really need to open both of them?

The right fender, at least on latter cars, usually had a block off plate behind the grill that was painted black. You may be better off with that side just leaving the patch and carefully opening or cutting new slots for the horn grill tabs. Then just paint the area behind the horn grill black. Not even the pickiest show judges would catch that!

did early cars only have one horn grille? I thought that on splits there might have been only the drivers side hole and grille for the hole?

yeah, i think there was just a black piece behind the grille, or was just left body color, split right fenders for sure just had the slots for the tabs and no hole, on oval standards they only had the drivers side grille and the right fender had no hole or grille, I saw a few '56-'57 Standards in Germany like that, there are only a handfull of oval Standards in the US, the Euro cars would not have had Bullets either, still had Semi's up till '60

so how does the passenger side grille mount to the fender. Just slots for the clips to slide in?

That's it. Just the slots and a solid black blanking plate that fits behind the grill that makes it look like there's a hole there.

yes its a fact, split and oval standards had nothing on the right front fender, SPLIT deluxe fenders just had the slots for the horn grille tabs without a "hole", I'm not sure about when the hole appeared, possibly the zwitter and early ovals didnt have the hole either?
