I am glad to hear that you are on the path to recovery. It is also great to know that you are maintaining your always positive attitude. You are very blessed to have Jamie watching your back. I pray your surgeries will go smoothly and you will heal rapidly.

A short rip report...

I didn't finish prepping the car until 8:15 the night before I left. One drive around the block, the next drive Friday morning into the trailer. Not a bunch of test time this time around. On the way out, I get a phone call from Auslander (Sal), who was helping Owen organize this memorial run for HBB. Turns out one of the baja's showed up to camp without the cylinder tin on it?!!! I know I went water cooled, but this just didn't sound very smart! He asked if I could pick some up on the way out and he would give me the cash at camp. So I stopped by Mohr Performance in Hesperia and brought some good used ones out with me. Turns out the guy knows very little about VW's and threw the motor together in a hurry to make it out (one of Brad's friends from somewhere). He ended up stripping the whole top off the motor to put the tins on. Decent looking car, has a lot of potential...

We didn't set off from camp until after 10 a.m. We were trying to wait for Ricko and Leather to show up. Leather had told Baja5 that he was "leaving first thing" Saturday morning from Needles to come out. Later in the day we found out that "first thing" for a Marine is around 12 noon... Shocked Ricko showed up too late for the run as well. His excuses turned out to be a speeding ticket while towing (70+, because he was running late. Rolling Eyes ) and showing up in camp with a flat tire on the trailer (must have burned it off at speed). The river crossing is very close to camp, so we talked a guy into ferrying us across with Owen's flat bed trailer. Just kept the brakes clamped on and rode it across...

The trailer was going under at the deepest point.

Owen said he measured a 22" depth at the deepest part. Owen, the yellow baja (can't remember his name), and QRP skipped the ferry and drove it across. My air filter is the same height as the top of my rear tires. I was not going to risk hydro-locking the motor sucking water into the throttle body. Baja5's ECU is mounted to his floor behind the driver's seat, and it doesn't play nice with water either. MrShocky, well, not sure why he got hauled across... he didn't have a good reason. Laughing

QRP did it the best... made waves and roosters! Some good shots here...

Floor it - we're sinking!!!

About a mile or so past the water crossing I got called on the CB. Baja5 was stopped with a broken trailing arm...

There were a lot of suggestions, like go to Barstow and try to have someone weld it up for the weekend, but this is too highly stressed of a part to monkey around with. He was done for the weekend. I hate to see this kind of failuer for anyone. It really sucked for Denny and family. After getting him back to camp on the trailer, we finally set off. And promptly stopped a couple miles later - for what, I still have no idea. Everyone got out, started smoking their cigarettes, and opening Bud Lights. Finally they got going again, just to stop five miles later at their "Shooting spot", just outside of the canyon. Apparently after loading several ice chests, they brough some rifles and shot guns along. Interesting crowd! I decided to just hang back and watch. At the shooting spot there were a few dirt bikes running around, so they kept the guns in the cars and we deiced to go across the desert floor towards another mountain with some small dunes at the base. I had one of the guys jump in with me, and told everyone we would meet them there. I needed to drive! Lack of baja makes me edgy, so we shot off down a dirt road that paralleled the railroad tracks. I had been on this road before, and new there were no surprises or bad whoops. Fourh gear on the pipe doing about 70 mph, dropping into third for a few squiggles here and there, but never below 60. Now I was finally having some fun! I didn't check the distance, but I would say we held that speed for about 7 or 8 minutes solid. By the time we stopped, my passenger had hand cramps from the "oh sh|t" handle. He told me he hadn't had a rush like that since he was sky diving... it was hilarious!

I didn't get any other pictures of the trip, and like a dumb ass I left the GoPro camera in the trailer all weekend... sometimes you end up having too much fun to think of these things. Cool

It was nice meeting Owen, Brad's father. He was camped with five other friends of Brad's, and it was cool meeting them as well. We heard a lot of fun stories about Brad and some of their trips to the desert when he was growing up. After missing his funeral I was really glad I got to go out on this one. Good times! Sorry you had to miss it Sal, hope you enjoy the pictures (too few, I know!).

You guys are going to have to learn to do like the Jeep Rock crawlers do. On guy always brings a big generator, and a welder on on his trailer.

At least the surgery went well. Pain absolutely sucks. I feel bad for you. I hope the next surgery will be pain free or at least not as painful. Hang in there Sal.

for your viewing pleasure, lol. Doc said 6 weeks of my shoulder being immobile, and then 6 week of getting it back to strength. If you look at the clavicle you can see where it splintered and they put screws in it, makes me hurt just looking at it. Doc said the surgery today won't be as bad im definetly asking for some good meds this time. When i saw my clavicle doc yesterday he said in a year i could have the screws and plate removed-Hell No i would not elect to have that pain all over again, lol

I really like all of the high dollar cars and their abilities at high speed off road runs....wish I had one... But come on, you can't even make a water crossing? I don't mean to be harsh, it just seems odd. I guess you didn't build them to be boats though...

I agree with you, unfortunately when I put my car together I wasn't thinking about water as we rarely ever get it in the Desert here, and my ECU for the fuel injection is mounted on the floorboard under the fuel tank. And with all the holes in the body and pan it would fill up and smoke the computer before I could get across.

I am trying to come up with some sork of extended air intake since that was the only reason I opted for the trailer. I still haven't built my ECU cover either (it's bolted to the rear firewall). Now that the motor is coming out, it will be reassembled with a nice sheet metal box over it. But the fans/radiator, and the wing side plates makes it harder to relocate the air intake. I had my intake manifold turned around when Outfront did my motor. At the time I didn't want to cut a hole in my firewall I just built. In hindsight, sending the air intake through the firewall and putting an Ump filter (or similar) in the package tray area sounds like the way I should have gone.

There is room for improvements on everything I suppose. I forgot that water in the desert is uncommon. Up here I swear all I drive through is water! Looks like you guys had a fun trip. I'm glad Brads ride gets run.
