I'm looking for carriers who will ship a Vanagon engine from Seattle to Santa Fe. Has anyone done this before? Recommendations? Costs? Packaging?
Thanks,
Stephen

I have used Forward Air before and was happy with the price and sevice. The engine had the exhuast remove, but I believe that everything else was left on. Sides and a top were screwed to the pallet. The price from Phoenix, Az to Minneapolis, MN was around $200. This was a few years back. I looked online and they have terminals in Seattle, and then the closest is Albuquerque. Good luck |

There is a newish shipping service called BidFreight. It is like eBay for shippers. Truckers with deadhead legs bid on your cargo.
http://www.bidfreight.com/shipper1.html
So you may want to give it a try.
Get a pallet. You can use some old nylon straps screwed directly to the pallet to secure it. You can also make a box on top out of scrap plywood and some internal bracing. Shipping is sometimes cheaper if it is boxed, due to the fact thy can stack on it. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

Thanks for the tips folks. Got the engine crated up and ready to go. Now I need to figure out how much it weighs. I've read stuff online where people guess at it, something like 250 lbs. That sounds light to me. I'm guessing more like 300 lbs. with exhaust attached, 350 lbs. with the crate and all.
Any other more knowledgeable guesses?

In a crate with every ancillary I'd call it 365. Just exhaust, no pumps, I'd call it 325. I ship them as longblocks all the time, in a crate, and they come in at about 290.
I use the brokering service I linked above, www.freightcenter.com , they've been great to deal with. You put in zip to zip, use freight Class 70, the weight, dimensions, the date it will ship, and it will return a long list of bids. Select one and set up an account and you'll be assigned an agent. You can do the whole thing online but it's easiest if you choose to let them call you to go over everything. You pay, print out your 2 Bills of Lading and either drop the freight at the terminal or wait for the pickup. They'll answer all your questions if you're unfamiliar with being a shipper. The service and rates have been excellent. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:
