I searched the VIN numbers here but couldn't find a match. What is this engine out of?

CB is the engine code for a bus 1700. Don't know about CBS. |

Is there a dipstick behind the breather? Does it have a fuel pump mount? |

The engine came out of a '72 bus that I junked over ten years ago. I believe it's a 1700 as I have a pair of 1700 heads and I can't remember where else they could of came from.
Yes there's a fuel pump mount and the dip stick is in the usual spot for a bus engine - you can see it in the lower right hand corner. _________________ Joey

S is for SPORTY!, you know, like those Porsche motors some busses have!
Seriously though, with the gold paint it looks like an exchange engine, I wonder if S is for substitute? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I believe the gold paint is actually alodining. I work for an oceanographic company and we get aluminum parts alodined and they look exactly like the finish on the engine. _________________ Joey

Alodine doesn't chip, it's part of the metal. That looks like yellow clearcoat or some other external coating from here. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Here's my two cents:
That's a rebuild by someone other than VW on a blank or ground down case. Why? If that was a "CBS" engine code (if they existed) The number would be 700972, which is way high. And actual VW engine numbers have the little VW symbol on the right after the number.
Generally engine numbers are actually CB-0-###### and they just leave out the first 0 on the case. So maybe this is a CB-S-###### where the S is for something special. Like Sweden? There's always funky stuff with Sweden buses; maybe that would explain why the number is so high as well.
Do you have the fan shroud that came with the engine? Do they match? |

I "think" that may be a rebuild engine from the old SIR outfit. They uses to paint some of their cases gold-ish. They did pretty decnt work back in the day...except for some issues with what they did to cylinder heads. Ray |
