I attached a chain to mine and ran the chain to a tree (not the same tree I backed into that caused the problem in the first place...@#$%!! blind spot) and slowly and carefully pulled it out. It's not perfect but I was pleased with the result. I wish fixing the back hatch was as easy.

I'm pretty sure this is going to get me skewered here, but I didn't pursue it.
I was in a hurry, she was Ethiopian and barely spoke English, and my gut told me it just wasn't going to be worth it. Had there been body damage beyond the bumper, I would have gone the route of insurance, police reports, and bureacracy. As it was, I didn't think it was worth the time or trouble. _________________ Joe T.

I see your point joetiger but a "pristine OEM" bumper is still a "pristine OEM" bumper.
The tissue paper thin bumpers from Israel and China are awfully crummy, most of the typical online parts houses wont even warranty them against rusting, let alone the fact that they bend in the wind. |

Yeah, I've had experience with an aftermarket rear bumper on my last Vanagon. It rusted really badly around the bottom side where the trailer hitch met it.
It was one of those heat-of-the-moment things. My wife was catching a flight to Park City in three hours and I was running all over town trying to surprise her with a new Burton snowboard.
MootPoint, that looks great! Nice work. I didn't have time to take mine off and bend it up this past weekend, but I like the tree idea! _________________ Joe T.

Sorry man; I don't understand why some people think that "nosing" into a parallel parking spot is a good idea.
I like your idea of waiting on the RMW bumpers. I am hoping to buy a set in the future too.
Cheers. _________________ Andy

Thanks. I was surprised how easy it was (and how little force it took) to bend it back into position...which also says something about the bumbers themselves. I might have even been able to get it even straighter if I'd tken it off and worked on it a little more but I didn't want to press my luck.
I still have a mess of mountain bike parts if anyone's interested... _________________ 1984 Westy with tencentlife power! |

Levi...I never said anything about a lawsuit and I do agree with you that we have become a litigious society.

Just wanted to resurrect this thread for a moment to throw out a big
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
To The Samba's own MSinabottle for hooking me up with his old bumper, which is in much better shape than my accordioned one.
Rob, may the Vanagon Karma gods smile upon all of your mods, past and future. I truly appreciate it.
I need to straighten it a bit before mounting, but it's going to work very well. I'm hoping to get on that this weekend. _________________ Joe T.

You're welcome, Joe, Louisiana's suffered enough in the last few years, anyway, 'bout time you got a break. I appreciated the handle you gave me and the distributor cap and rotor. I'm still hoping someone's got the wedges for a driver's side grab handle install.
There ought to be threads, if we wouldn't be too evil, for 'pay it forward' VW freecycling of parts. I've got the windows, for example, that I took out of Winston for the Jalousie install. I suppose I could sell them, but to a fellow Sambanista in need, I could easily pass them on. We can talk about all this at VW's on the Green.

Today I tried to install the bumper I got from Rob, but it was bowed towards the middle and the license plate cover wouldn't come down over it. I tapped on it here and there and then realized that I also couldn't get an end cap snugly on one side of it. So, I took another look at my original wrinkled bumper and decided to attack with a sledgehammer.
It actually worked out fairly well. It's still a little wavy, but not too bad:
I'll bring Rob's hitch/bumper out to VW's on the Green next Sunday.
(Accompanying oil stains all over the driveway are from bad o-rings on my dipstick tube) _________________ Joe T.

I'm glad to see that thing being useful. Call Denver Bumper and see if they could completely de-wave your old one, and if so, for how much!
Shall be there at VWOTG. I want to fix that $%#@&*! hole in Winston's interior side panel, and install my new rear hatch release as soon as I figure it all out.
