We took a cruise today with about 22 cars. All were of the micro and mini type. I qualified with the micro bus. We had a few Ghias but none of the bugs showed up. There were quite a few interesting models we drove with over about 75 miles. I posted the link to the photbucket for the folks who want to see all of them.
What really intrigued me though was the old "Red Apple Rest". Perhaps there are a few east coast folks who are familiar with it? Maybe a few transplanted NY and NJ people who would be interested to see what it looks like today. I'll try and add some historic shots later and perhaps a link to some history.
But take a look at the bus in front of the old Rt. 17 popular rest stop. The rest stop slowly dried up as a stop over but it took years. Now the place is completely closed. I can recall stopping there with my split window bus many years ago when it was still open. Even further back with my parents. I thought the pictures were pretty cool. Perhaps a few of you will think so also. I'm sure many old VWs stopped there on the way to Woodstock and back.

looks fun - I'm directly across the river by Sing Sing. Once my ride is rollin (july / Aug?) let me know about the gathering and we'll ad a 74 bay to the list of micros minis and such! (I never knew about the place!)

We may do another run in the fall. I'll post it once I find out. The weather was perfect. |

I grew up in eastern NY and used to travel route 17 with my parents when we'd go to visit relatives. Stopped at the Red Apple more than a few times.
I also remember stopping there in a school bus a few times - maybe on the way to another school for sports or on a field trip?
Anyway, thanks for posting these pics. Brings back good memories!
Nice Bus by the way! Mine's a '70 Westy also, but it's the white color, will have it on the road soon! Maybe I'll be able to join y'all if you do this again in the fall

They used to have 3-5 lanes where the busses would pull off of Rt. 17 and drive around the back of the building. I recall seeing them parked there 4,5 deep in rows of 5. The place would pack them in. But the best part was getting a soft ice cream at the ouside window near the end of the building. |

Nothing 'mini' about the Hummer or the Double Cab pickup. _________________ Eric

Yeah that was one of the two vehicles which brought the King Midget and a vespa. The other one towed the Messerschmidt. |

Sounds like a fun trip.
Those are some pretty intense little cars! _________________ 1972 Deluxe named Lucidity

Yeah it was a fun day, a pleasure to share it with good people and cool cars. I was expecting a few more beetles which were on the list. Perhaps we can do better with the beetle folks on the next run.....I think someone had mentioned that the Red Apple was designated an historic site now and could have a resto project behind it. Hard to say, its so easy for these things to get derailed. One spotted owl or a drop of motor oil in the dirt and its a federal case for decades. |
